Estonian Elizaveta Anikina and Mohammed Genidy of Egypt have captured the Internationale Deutsche Tennismeisterschaften U14 Super Category event in Düren, Germany. In the finals, they defeated Isabella Ruyu Yan (CAN) and Luys Calin (GER) respectively.
Anikina has now won an impressive seventh Junior Tour title this year and has almost certainly cemented her spot at the Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo. It was a supremely dominant performance from the top seed, with her toughest win coming in the semifinals where even then she conceded only six games.
Anikina’s Road to the Title:
R64: def Alessandra Urga (GER) 6-3 6-0
R32: def Musemma Cilek (AUS) 6-0 6-0
R16: def Zita Sziklai (HUN) 6-1 6-1
QF: def Ayaka Isawa (JPN) 6-2 6-3
SF: def Violetta Skryp (UKR) 6-2 6-4
F: def Yan 6-0 6-1
Upon claiming her second Super Category title, Anikina was all smiles, stating “I’m very happy that I could succeed and did my best in every match. I’m very happy with the way I played (in the final). See what else she had to say:
Genidy has already tasted success on the Junior Tour this year, claiming the Category 1 title in Annecy; he had previously picked up the doubles trophy as well as making the fourth round in singles in Tarbes. As with Anikina, it was relatively smooth sailing all the way to the title for the Egyptian who earned the title without having dropped a set.
Genidy’s Road to the Title:
R64: def Bruno Giovanni Condorelli (ITA) 6-1 6-1
R32: def Reita Yamanaka (JPN) 6-4 6-0
R16: def Francisco Sardinha (POR) 6-1 6-4
QF: def Miguel Ferraz (BRA) 6-3 6-2
SF: def Siyun Kim (KOR) 6-4 6-1
F: def Luys Calin (GER) 6-1 6-3
After winning, Ginedy told us, “I am very, very happy. The level in Europe is so good, (so many) different players, smart players - it is a good experience for me. Thank you so much (to Tennis Europe), I think that's my most important tournament this year!”
Despite the loss in the final, it was an especially impressive feat for Calin, who was the doubles winner at the European Junior Championships last week in Most. He played the final last Sunday and had to make the quick turnaround to get to Düren in time to play on Monday. When asked for his thoughts, Calin exuded positivity, “It felt amazing to be in a Super Category final for the first time! I have already been in two Super Category doubles finals but never in singles. I am really happy and proud of myself for the two weeks I had, because it was definitely not easy to travel from Most and then play another match the next day! I hope I am going to have many more of these results because my goal for the year is to play the Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo!”
This tournament, as its name implies, attracts players from all corners of the world and is a testament to the organisers and to the allure of the Junior Tour. Indeed, four of the eight singles semifinalists were non-European and, in the doubles, the international flavour was tangible, with all eight boys’ and girls’ finalists hailing from beyond the old continent. The Syrian-Chinese combination of Muhamad Eyad Saleem & Yu Ting Wu defeated Leith Bennaceur of Tunisia & Mohammed Ginedy, the Egyptian singles champ, 6-7 6-4 10-3. In the girls’ doubles final, the Canadian pairing of Milagros Helena Pastuszka & Isabella Ruyu Yan (the singles finalist), were too strong for Shivali Gurung & Ke-Chieh Hsu of Nepal and Chinese Taipei respectively. The Canadians won the final 6-4 6-3.
This is the fifth 14&U Super Category event of the year, following tournaments in Tarbes, France (January), Stockholm, Sweden (February), Maia, Portugal (April) and Milan, Italy (May). The sixth and final Super Category event of 2025 to take place will be in Barcelona, Spain at the end of September and for which registrations open tomorrow, 4th of August. Click here to register.
