GreenTennis

Tennis Europe is a leading participant in ‘GreenTennis,’ a pioneering new initiative from Erasmus+.

As part of the ‘Tennis for a Greener Future’ project, the European Tennis Association will link up with 8 other organisations for a three-year scheme which aims to address the environmental impact of the sport by implementing sustainable practices across the tennis ecosystem, including at National Tennis Centres and at events of all levels.

Introducing the scheme in late 2024, Tennis Europe Vice-President Cem Tinaz commented, "We are thrilled to lead the "Tennis for a Greener Future" project, which addresses the urgent need for environmental sustainability. Tennis, with its global popularity, presents a unique opportunity to inspire eco-friendly practices and create a lasting impact. By working closely with our key partners, we will maximize our efforts to reduce the sport's environmental footprint and set new standards for sustainability in tennis. Our goal is to transform tennis into a leading example of how sports can drive meaningful environmental change."

Joining Tennis Europe in the venture, which is co-funded by the European Union, are the Hungarian Tennis Association (HUN), Centenary Tennis Clubs (SUI), Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio (ESP), Stfitelsen We Play Green (NOR), AIforLives GmbH (GER), Mobile Adventure (POL) and Collective Innovation AS (NOR).

Update: 17.10.2025

The GreenTennis project partners met on 16th October at the headquarters of Mobad (Mobile Adventure) in Warsaw, Poland.

The group was provided with an extensive update on the research and fieldwork that has been carried out recently led by UCAM (Catholic University of Murcia). Initial findings into two surveys – of young players, and of clubs/managers/coaches - were also presented.

The surveys elicited more 500 responses from players, coaches and club managers from all over Europe, and focused on the attitudes and behaviours of individuals involved in tennis in a variety of roles.

Analysis of the data has enlightened the researchers on the current conditions across Europe and will serve to inform future activities. Detailed findings of the surveys will be published soon on the communication channels of the project.

The group also discussed the next steps, including upcoming work on the GreenTennis facility and event toolkits and guides as well as further work on the development of educational and awareness raising resources.

The next meeting is planned to take place online at the beginning of 2026.
