Former Tennis Europe #1s power on

2021 has been a breakout year so far for some of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s outstanding recent alumni. One of the most promising, Linda Fruhvirtova, secured another important milestone in her young career last night, when the 15-year-old Czech player scored her first WTA main draw victory in the 250 event in Charleston. Coming in as a wildcard entrant, the former Les Petits As champion is through to the second round after outlasting French veteran Alizé Cornet – a fellow former European Junior Champion - who was forced to withdraw injured at 4-4 in the third set.

“It was one of the most spectacular matches I’ve played,” recounted the jubilant teen. “The way we both fought for every point, it was amazing. Alizé is one of the biggest fighters on tour. She doesn’t give a point for free.”

Fruhvirtova, a winner of many Junior Tour events, joins the ranks of Carlos Alcaraz (ESP), Lorenzo Musetti (ITA), Holger Rune (DEN), Clara Tauson (DEN) and Coco Gauff (USA), all of whom have reached #1 on Tennis Europe’s 16 & Under ranking lists in the past two years, and have also been making impressive inroads on the professional circuits in recent weeks.
