16&U | Sanchez Casal Youth Cup | Barcelona, Spain

Sebastianna Scilipoti from Switzerland and Qualifier Tim Thomas Guantlett of Hong Kong have taken the titles at the Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona. Both players scored straight sets wins in the finals in a tournament dedicated to the memory of former academy alumnus Dani Usón (pictured).

Scilipoti appears to be going from strength to strength this year, having now claimed her first Category 1 event after two previous Category 3 victories. She nabbed the title with a resounding 6-2 6-1 win over fourth seeded Lucija Ciric Bagaric (CRO) in the final. Gauntlett, for his part, saw off second seed Vladimir Popov, sixth seed Niccolo Dessi (ITA) and fourth seed Jakub Prachar (CZE) on route to his 6-2 6-2 dismissal of eighth seed Vilius Gaubas (LTU) in the decider.

Highlighting what was an especially international field, the girls’ doubles title went to top seeds Kateryna Lazarenko (UKR) & Ada Piestrzynska (POL). They pipped Bagaric & Xenia Lipiec (POL) in the final, claiming the trophy with a 4-6 6-2 11-9 comeback win. The Greek pairing of Evangelos Kypriotis & Basilis Voltirakis won the boys’ doubles in a one-sided 6-3 6-2 final over Gaubas & Ivo Isqueiro (POR).

14&U | Bohemia Cafex Cup | Rakovnik, Czech Republic

Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez (MEX) has won his first Tennis Europe Junior Tour title of the year to claim the coveted Rakovnik title. It was a case of third time lucky for Nikola Bartunkova (CZE), who had the added bonus of playing on home soil. The Prague native, who twice this year has been held at bay in a final, finally made her breakthrough in Rakovnik.

Top seed Georg Eduard Israelan (GER) was hoping to score title number two in 2019. After coming through two tough matches before the final, things were looking good for the German as he held a lead in the decider. However, it was not to be. Mendez, who had earlier taken out Les Petits As champ Vojtek Petr in the quarters, scored a come-from-behind win to topple Israelan 3-6 7-6(2) 6-0 in the final.

Going into the girls’ final, Bartunkova was to face Petra Marcinko (CRO), who was playing her fifth final of the year, having notched two wins already in 2019. Both Bartunkova and Marcinko looked strong and had scored important wins over [5] Stella Remander (FIN) and [3] Daria Yesypchuk (UKR) respectively in their semis. Both players fought tooth and nail in a final which was every bit as close as all pundits had expected it to be. Eventually, Bartunkova took it 4-6 6-2 7-5.

Honours in the boys’ doubles went to Tikhon Fedorov (BLR) & Oleksandr Ponomar (UKR), while the Czech team of Lucie Havlickova & Katrin Pavkova lifted the girls’ doubles trophy.
