Every coach has worked with a player who looks ready in training and then struggles to reproduce that level in competition. The difference rarely lies in technique or tactics. It shows up in how a player handles pressure on key points, recovers after mistakes and keeps focus when the score gets tight.
"The mind needs reps, just like the body," says Mar Mainetti, founder of Mental Point, Official Mental Training Partner of Tennis Europe. Her team trains it on court and inside the coach's plan: between-point routines, a shared key word between coach and player, and pressure built into everyday drills. During the case study, coaches will see some of these tools in action and leave with one they can try in their next session.
Research supports this. Studies on mental practice and self-talk show measurable effects on performance. And at the top of the game, the numbers make the point: Roger Federer won almost 80% of his matches while winning only 54% of the points he played. Most of a match happens between points, in the 25 seconds a player has to reset.
