Armenia’s Arno Avetisyan and Poland’s Olimpia Jagodzinska have won this year’s 16&U Category 1 event in Warsaw, Poland. It was a positive result for the host nation, fielding one finalist in both singles finals at the Bohdan Tomaszewski Cup.
Avetisyan was too strong for Igor Bartnik (POL), taking the final 6-2 7-5 in their first meeting. Post-match the Armenian was content, “I had a really great tournament, and comebacks of course,” sighting that having to “play aggressively in pressure moments” and not playing conservatively was key to his victory.
In the girls’ final, Jagodzinska ran away with the title after a tough first set, posting a 7-5 6-1 win over Ana Chachkhunashvili of Georgia. “I’m really happy with my win and how I played today … and that I won in my country!”
With Avetisyan at #29 and Jagodzinska sitting at #42 in the Race to Monte-Carlo, expect to see a leap for both players in Tuesday’s rankings update.
The second seed Avetisyan came into the final on the back of a tough quarterfinal win, sandwiched between a slew of solid straight sets scorelines. Bartnik, progressed to the final having knocked out several seeds along the way including [6] Sebastian Janda (SVK), [3] Olivier Krupa (POL) and top-seeded Ukrainian Vladyslav Bohomolkin. In the end, it was Avetisyan who claimed his third title from four finals this season.
Jagodzinska’s road to the girls’ final mirrored that of her compatriot Bartnik and his giant-killing run to the decider. She up-ended the third seed Danai Margariti (CYP) in the quarters before her semifinal take-down of Raya Markova (BUL), allowing the #1 seed a mere two games. Just like Bartnik, Jadgodzinska also faced the second seed in the final – Chachkhunashvili. The Georgian had her own fair share of battles on the way, including a brutal quarterfinal encounter, where she was stretched to a third set by recent Sarajevo champion Zana Peric. The final, though, went the way of the home player, with Jagodzinska winning her second 16&U Junior Tour title of the year and third overall.
In the doubles Chachkhunashvili and Markova were hoping to notch back-to-back Category One wins after their Sarajevo title. However, their hopes were dashed as they went down in a match tie-break with Christine Graf (MON) & Leonie Schauer (AUT) (pictured above/Instagram link) holding off the top seeds 6-4 5-7 10-2. It was a second doubles final and maiden title of the year for Graf, having faced her partner Schauer across the net in the Ulm (Germany) final last month (Müller Junior Cup), where the Austrian picked up her first doubles title of 2026.
Avetisyan teamed with Bohomolkin to win the boys’ doubles event - their fourth and second doubles titles of the season respectively. In their second victory together, the pair took out Michal Chyla (POL) & Volodymyr Shyrshkov (UKR) 6-3 6-2.
