Development Committee Meets in Moldova During Historic Week for National Tennis

The Tennis Europe Development Committee gathered in the Republic of Moldova from 21–24 May 2026, with official meetings taking place on 22 May during a landmark week for tennis in the country.

The visit coincided with the grand opening of the new Moldova National Training Centre in Chișinău, a major milestone for the Moldova Tennis Federation and a significant step forward for tennis development in the region. The state-of-the-art facility has also received official ITF White Recognition status, awarded under the ITF National Training Centre Recognition Programme for meeting the federation’s international quality standards.

Tennis Europe President Henrik Thorsøe Pedersen attended the celebrations alongside Tennis Europe Vice President and Development Committee Chair Cem Tinaz, underlining the importance of the occasion for the European tennis family. They were joined by Moldova Tennis Federation President Ceslav Ciuhrii, representatives of the International Tennis Federation, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu, and President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu.

The inauguration programme featured a series of official events across 22–23 May, including a press conference, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and gala celebrations. The centrepiece of the opening weekend was a special exhibition event featuring former world No.1 Simona Halep, Grand Slam champion Juan Martín del Potro, Moldovan player Radu Albot, and rising Moldovan talent Lia Belibova.

During their stay in Moldova, members of the Tennis Europe Development Committee held discussions focused on participation growth, player pathways, coach education, and strengthening support structures for Tennis Europe member nations. The timing of the meeting provided an opportunity to witness first-hand how investment in infrastructure and long-term federation planning can positively impact the development of the sport.

The opening of the Moldova National Training Centre represents a new chapter for tennis in the country and reflects the growing ambition of the Moldova Tennis Federation to establish a strong platform for future generations of players.

Tennis Europe congratulates the Moldova Tennis Federation on this important achievement and looks forward to continued collaboration in supporting tennis development across the region.
