Top seeds assert authority in Piestany and Vic

Top seeds assert authority in Piestany and Vic

It was a good week for the top seeds, as some of the Junior Tour's most successful players of the year so far continued their advances to towards the ultimate goal of a place at the Junior Masters finals in Monte-Carlo in October.

14&U Cat.1 | Piestany, SVK | 33rd Ensana Piestany Cup

The top seed Martin Adamca (SVK) and the second seeded Liam Sharkey (GBR) faced off in the final. Having already battled it out in the doubles final (see below), another trophy, as well as pride, was up for grabs.

It was the Slovak who had been more consistent, winning all his proceeding matches comfortably, while the Brit had a bumpier road to the final, including a three-set stumble in the semis and a walkover in the R16. Whether this helped or hindered Sharkey is unclear, however, what was clear is that the doubles win, a home-court advantage and avenging a loss in the Stockholm Super Category final was the perfect recipe to propel Adamca to a 6-4 7-5 win in the final. Sharkey and Adamca are currently separated by 45 points atop the Race to Monte-Carlo, and Tuesday’s update should see them extend their lead over the rest of the field. An interesting summer awaits.

Race leader Eva Bulai (ROU) came into the tournament in great form, having finished as the runner-up at the Maia Super Category event. Alexandra Jonoskova’s (SVK) best result this year was a runner-up berth at a Category 2 tournament (Kosiče) in her home nation last month. Both players breezed through the early rounds before overcoming tough opponents in three-set semis, eager to make the final and claim their first title of the season. After a long fight, it was Bulai who landed the winning punch: just one break of serve in the end secured the Romanian a 6-4 2-6 6-4 victory, her maiden title of the year and an impressive 11th win from 19 singles finals on the Junior Tour since 2022.

Boys’ Final: Martin Adamca & Max Kimak (SVK) d. Anastasis Mosaikos (CYP) & Liam Sharkey (GBR) 6-4 6-3
Girls’ Final: Michaela Filvola & Alexandra Janoskova (SVK) d. Monica Bacikova & Emily Bukalova (CZE) 7-5 4-6 10-3

16&U Cat.1 | Vic (Barcelona), ESP | 24° Memorial Nacho Juncosa

Last year’s 14 & Under boys’ Player of the Year (14&U) Rafael Pagonis kicked off his campaign strongly, securing straight set wins in the early rounds. In a display of scintillating form, the current #4 in the 16&U ranking posted back-to-back 6-0 6-0 wins en route to a semi final win over another Spaniard, Izan Hernandez.

In the other half of the draw, Rafa Garcia’s progress was equally convincing, as the Spanish player also kept a clean sheet before facing Pagonis. Having secured a Category 1 victory last month just twenty minutes up the road in Torelló on hardcourt, moving over to the red dirt presented another challenge, as well as the task of challenging Pagonis, who won their only previous encounter as Garcia retired mid-way through the match in Avvenire last year.

This time the battle between the top two seeds was much closer, but ultimately which went the way of Pagonis 6-4 6-7 6-2, giving him his first Junior Tour title of the year and an extraordinary 24th tour title overall!

The top two seeds in the girls draws, however, endured completely different fates than in the boys’. Second seed Olimpia Jagodzinska of Poland fell at the first hurdle, although she made up for it in the doubles (see below). Anna Chuchilina saw off top seed Konstantina Volonaki (GRE) in the quarterfinals, as well as two other seeds on her way to the decider, while #3 Sofia Kova quietly advanced to the final without dropping a set.

The final came down to focus, and it was Kova who better did that from the outset, reeling off six games on the trot. By the time her opponent regrouped it was almost too late, as Kova eased to a 6-0 6-4 win to score her fourth TEJT title, all of which have come on home soil. She's sure to strengthen her position near the top of the Race to Monte-Carlo rankings when they are updated next Tuesday.

14&U Cat.3 | Tsaghkadzor, ARM | Tsaghkadzor Spring Trophy 1

Darina Matsautova won her third singles title of the season at the Tsaghkadzor Sport Center & Hotel in Armenia. She strolled to the win with a 6-0 6-0 victory over Maria Shilga in the final, and later added the doubles title for good measure. Fourth seed Aleksandr Rogachev won the boys' title.
