Italy has once again been recognized as Europe’s leading tennis nation, dominating the podium for a fourth consecutive year at Tennis Europe’s annual awards ceremony, held today at the European Federation’s Annual General Meeting in Gdansk, Poland.
The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) successfully held on to three of the six awards for tennis excellence, retaining three titles for performance during 2025:
- Beach Tennis: Italy registered a 5th straight win in a category it has won every year since it was first included to the European Tennis Trophy in 2021.
- Professional Tennis: 2025 saw Jannik Sinner win two Grand Slams, a resurgent Lorenzo Musetti break into the Top 10, and Jasmine Paolini win a WTA 1000 title on home soil in Rome. These successes were compounded by a successful defense of both the Davis Cup (third win in a row) and Billie Jean King Cup (second win in a row) world championship titles.
- Overall Performance: Italy’s crowning glory, the FITP scored more highly than all other European nations for a fourth consecutive year and seventh in total, with previous wins coming in 2024, 2023, 2022, 1998, 1995 and 1994.
Reacting to the news, FITP President Angelo Binaghi stated, “Tennis in Italy is now enjoying a level of passion and participation that is truly unprecedented, and it is also thanks to this extraordinary energy that our movement continues to achieve results of the highest level. Staying at the top is always more difficult than getting there, which is precisely why this new success makes us particularly proud. Italy continues to stand out across all disciplines of our sport — from grassroots activity to the professional game and including beach tennis — demonstrating the strength and consistency of our system.
This achievement is the result of the constant commitment of players, coaches, officials and clubs, as well as of our ability to look ahead without becoming overly complacent about what has already been accomplished; our objective is to remain among the leading nations through daily work and to keep setting ourselves ever more ambitious goals. We therefore hope not to stop here… and to have the pleasure of finding ourselves among your award winners again in the years to come.”
Other nations to successfully ‘defend’ their 2024 titles include:
- Czechia, claiming a fifth straight win in Junior Tennis (ninth in total), and finishing third for overall performance
- Germany maintains a vice-like grip on the Senior Tennis title, winning for a 34th time and still the only country ever to win this category
- Netherlands has now made it five wins in a row for Wheelchair Tennis, having won 22 of 24 years in the history of this category
Hungary climbed a massive 10 spots in the European league table to finish 14th and claim the award for ‘Most Improved Nation’. Meanwhile, climbing 4 spots to #8 overall, Ukraine posted an impressive year to be crowned ‘Best Performing ‘B’ Nation’. The ‘Best Performing C Nation’ was Latvia, who also climbed 4 spots to finish at #21.
