Crete to host European Beach Tennis Championships

Tennis Europe has announced that the European Beach Tennis Championships will be staged on the Greek island of Crete for the next two years.

Hosted by the Hellenic Tennis Federation for the first time, the 2022 event will be held at the Lyttos Beach Resort from 29 September – 2 October. 11 Beach Tennis courts are due to be custom-built for the tournament.

The European Championships is a closed regional championship event on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, at which doubles teams nominated by Tennis Europe’s member nations compete for men’s, women’s and mixed doubles titles.

The tournament also features not one but two ‘Beach Tennis Championships for Juniors’ side-events, held prior to the main event (26-28 September) with competitions for players aged 14 & Under and 18 & Under.

Tennis Europe President Ivo Kaderka said, “We’d like to thank the Hellenic Tennis Federation for providing the perfect home for this prestigious event until 2023. Lyttos Beach has a wealth of experience in hosting international tennis events and we are sure that the region’s best Beach Tennis players will enjoy the wonderful facilities on offer there.”

Over 170 athletes from 15 European nations took part in the 2021 competition. Gold medals went to Doriano Beccaccioli & Mattia Spoto (ITA) in the men’s competition, world #1 Giulia Gasparri & Ninny Valentine (ITA) in the women’s, and Eva Fernandez Palos & Antonio Ramos Viera (ESP) in the mixed.

Entry forms and further information will be sent to member nations in due course.
