16:55 - TITLES FOR RUZIC & BIELINSKIY IN KLOSTERS

The European 18 & Under singles titles were claimed by unseeded Antonia Ruzic and second seed Viacheslav Bielinskyi.

As the beautiful weather took a break on Sunday, the finals had to be played indoors. The numerous spectators saw a fascinating first set between Antonia Ruzic of Croatia and Alina Granwehr, with the Swiss unable to convert any of her six set-points. Shortly after, she took a medical timeout but there was no improvement as far as her shoulder was concerned. She then took the difficult decision to retire at 5-7, 0-2.

“It is never nice to finish a match this way”, Ruzic said in the on-court interview, “but I wish Alina a speedy recovery and that she soon can compete again.” Despite the unlucky end, Ruzic is a worthy title winner. In her four previous matches, she had consecutively beaten the number 7, 9, 3 and 1 seeds of the draw and proved her ITF junior ranking of 174 was no measure or her ability. “I am focusing on my pro career but I am extremely happy to take this title”, she smiled. Back in February she made her Billie Jean King Cup debt for Croatia.

Both finalists then posed for pictures with Martina Hingis, who took part in the prize-giving ceremony. The Swiss superstar was the very first champion of the EJCS in Klosters back in 1994, she had won the title at the tender age of 13 years and 10 months. “Junior events were very important for my development”, the superstar, winner of 25 Grand Slam titles and the world number one for 209 weeks, said in a short interview on court, “…and some of the memories last forever.”

The boys final was basically a ‘family affair’ with players from different nations. “He is my best friend”, Bielinskyi explained after taking the title 7-5, 6-3. And the runner-up Petr Nesterov (BUL) added: “It is one of the toughest things to play against him for me.”

Bielinskyi was the number two seed and dropped only one set on route to the final, as did his opponent. The Ukrainian, a quarter finalist at this year’s Roland Garros, has high hopes for the future: “My goals are to play Grand Slams, Davis Cup and possibly the ATP Tour finals.”

15:35 - CZECHS SWEEP 14&U DOUBLES GOLD MEDALS

Home players walked away with a best-ever haul of three of the possible four gold medals in Most as the boys’ and girls’ pairs swept the doubles titles on Sunday afternoon.

Tereza Valentova returned to the court a short while after her singles victory to add the doubles title alongside partner Marie Slamenikova. They took the first set against top seeds Rositsa Dencheva & Yoana Konstantinova (BUL) by a comfortable margin 6-3, and then held on to claim the second in a tie break. The win marks a second doubles title of the year for both players.

Other players to achieve the singles-doubles dual win in this age category include the likes of Iga Swiatek, Justine Henin and Steffi Graf.

The boys’ top seeds Jan Kumstat & Maxim Mrva lived up to their billing by cruising to a 6-3 6-3 win over Justin Engel & Max Schoenhaus of Germany. For Kumstat the win marked a second medal of the day, having ended the singles competition as runner-up. Mrva was appearing in his seventh doubles final of the season, though he had just one title from the previous six finals, while for Kumstat the win is his first doubles title of 2021.

13:00 - GOLD FOR DJOSIC & VALENTOVA IN MOST

Nikola Djosic of Switzerland and Czech Tereza Valentova are the new European 14 & Under Champions.

Unseeded Djosic capped an unforgettable week in which beat seeds #9, 7, 4 and 1 with another upset, this time over fifth seeded home player Jan Kumstat. The marathon match saw Djosic drop his sole set of the week. After being broken in the twelfth game to lose the first set 7-5, it was Kumstat who held his nerve at the crunch end of the second, eventually claiming it 7-4 in the tie break to level. Djosic reasserted his authority in the decider though, running away to a 6-3 win to become the first Swiss boy since Michael Kratochvil to win the 14 & Under title. Remarkably, the win is just his fourth Tennis Europe Junior Tour singles title, and first above Category 3 level.

"The experience here was indescribable, I learned so much," Djosic told us. "After the final I could not really believe what a good tournament it was. All of them played so good that I had to fight for every point."

Tereza Valentova gave the home fans something to cheer when she became the second unseeded singles champion this year. She followed up an impressive run of wins over higher ranked opposition (accounting for #16 Shanice Roignot, #7 Julia Stusek, #5 Ksenia Smirnova, #2 Rositsa Dencheva) with a three-set win over European #1 Alina Korneeva of Russia, 6-3 2-6 6-2. Like Djosic, Valentova had just three previous Junior Tour titles, though notably won the Cat.2 16 & Under event in Budapest earlier this year.

All four finalists will also receive invitations to compete at the season-ending Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo in October.

Day 6

19:25 - DOUBLES TITLES FOR GERMANY, CZECH REPUBLIC IN KLOSTERS

The first titles in Klosters have been awarded in doubles to the Boys of Czech Republic and the Girls of Germany. Both contests were decided in the match tiebreak.

The unseeded Swiss team of Jérôme Kym & Jan Sebesta was in the driving seat and leading by a set and a break when play was halted because of a short spell of rain. They lost the momentum and Adam Jurajda & Daniel Siniakov managed to force a decider. Again, the Swiss gave their fans plenty of hope, led mostly in the match tiebreak and had a good chance at 8-7 to secure themselves two match points. The Czechs showed strong defensive skills however and eventually prevailed 11-9. The win marks a second consecutive European Championship gold medal for Jurajda & Siniakov, who also won the 16 & Under title in Moscow in 2019.

In the last match of the day, the top-seeded international combination of Linda Noskova & Diana Shnaider faced fierce resistance for the first time. The Czech and Russian pairing had conceded just fourteen games in four matches but were challenged by Mara Guth & Julia Middendorf. The third-seeded Germans finally got the edge.

The Swiss crowd will have plenty to cheer for on the final day. Alina Granwehr continued her mission in the semifinals with a three-set-win over French Open champion Linda Noskova. After having squandered four match points in the second set, the Swiss kept her cool and was clearly the better player in the decider. She will face another unseeded player in the final: Croat Antonia Ruzic (ITF 174, pictured). The former Junior Masters champion defeated top-seeded Elsa Jacquemot of France to back up her win of the previous round over Czech prodigy Linda Fruhvirtova.

The boys’ final will be contested by Viacheslav Bielinskyi and Petr Nesterov. The second seed from Ukraine won in straight sets against Bor Artnak of Slovenia whereas the player from Bulgaria, seeded eighth, prevailed in a tough fight against Vilius Gaubas from Lithuania. On the way to the showdown, both players have lost just one set.

13:00 - VALENTOVA INTO HOME FINAL

Tereza Valentova (pictured, below) is the first player into the girls' final in Most. The Czech breezed to a 6-0 6-3 win over fifth seed Ksenia Smirnova. She awaits top seed Alina Korneeva, the winner of a three-set battle with Renata Jamrichova (SVK).

Three of the four will be back on court for the doubles semi-final later. Valentova will team with Marie Slamenikova as Smirnova will hope for revenge with Korneeva.

11:20 - KUMSTAT vs. DJOSIC FOR GOLD IN MOST

Two surprisingly one-sided semi-finals have set up the boys' 14 & Under Championship decider. Nikola Djosic (SUI) was first into the final, easing to a 6-1 6-4 win over top seed Maxim Mrva. He'll take on another Czech, Jan Kumstat (pictured). The fifth seed took just five more minutes to end the run of Germany's Max Schoenhaus, 6-1 6-3

Day 5

20:15 - DOUBLES FINALS SET IN KLOSTERS

The doubles finals in Klosters will feature the boys of Switzerland versus Czech Republic, and the girls of Germany versus a combination of Russia and Czech Republic.

Save the best for last - this was definitely true on Friday from a Swiss perspective. Jérôme Kym/Jan Sebesta dismissed the number 5 seeds from Slovenia in straight sets in the last match of the day. They advanced to the final with their fourth consecutive win over a seeded pairing. Previously, they had taken out consecutively seeds 7 (Sweden), 10 (Belarus) and (2) Russia. With this record, they will also feel good about their chances against Adam Jurajda/Daniel Siniakov. The Czechs, number 6 in the draw, came atop the number 1 seeds from Poland, Maks Kasnikowski/Alexander Orlikowski.

The pairing of Mara Guth/Julia Middendorf prevailed against Hungarians Natalia Szabanin/Amarissa Kiara Toth in a champions' tiebreak. On Saturday, the Germans will challenge top-seeded Linda Noskova and Diana Shnaider, who made short work of Czechs Linda Fruhvirtova/Dominika Salkova.

17:45 - FORMER PLAYERS GUIDE THE NEXT GENERATION

Among the team captains at the European Junior Championships every year are several former professional players. Marco Keller spoke to Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer (pictured) and Alexia Dechaume-Balleret of France in Klosters about their memories of the event, and their transition from player to coach. 16:40 - 18 & UNDER CHAMPIONSHIPS QUARTERFINAL ROUND-UP

Two one-sided encounters and two matches full of drama: The girls’ quarterfinals gave plenty of highlights for the spectators. Moreover, home fans were happy as Alina Granwehr (ITF 99) was the first player to secure a medal. One day after dismissing second seed Diana Shnaider in straight sets, she made even quicker work of Aysegul Mert of Turkey and jumped to a 6-2, 6-2 win. In the semi-finals, she will face Linda Noskova, who beat Alina Shcherbinina from Russia in a gruelling encounter. The Czech with powerful groundstrokes, who will only turn 17 in November, has only played two junior events this year. At the beginning of June, she won her maiden Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros.

The Czechs were close to securing a second medal. Linda Fruhvirtova, six months younger than Noskova and seeded as number 3, had five match points versus Antonia Ruzic (ITF 174) but couldn’t convert any of them at 5-4 in the decider. The Croat eventually prevailed in this high-quality match as she won the final tiebreak 7-3. On Saturday, Ruzic – the 2018 Junior Masters champion - will face top-seed Elsa Jacquemot, the 2020 Roland Garros junior winner. The World Number 2 from France served a ‘double bagel’ to Polina Iatcenko (RUS/8).

In the Boys draw, the highest seed left in the draw advanced after a marathon match. Viacheslav Bielinskyi from the Ukraine, the number 2 seed, beat German Liam Gavrielides 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a high-level match in a heated atmosphere. The Ukrainian will be challenged by Slovenian Bor Artnak, who ended the fairytale run of Swiss Dylan Dietrich (ITF 323). In the second semi-final, the number 14 of the draw will play number 8: Vilius Gaubas of Lithuania faces Petr Nesterov of Bulgaria.

09:20 - QUARTERFINALS DAY

We're down to the last 8 players in each age category. Check out today's Order of Play from Most and Klosters.

Amongst Friday's battles are a showdown between in-form Federico Cina (ITA) and European #1 Maxim Mrva (CZE) in Most. On the girls' side, home player Alina Kovackova, a winner of 39 Junior Tour matches this season, takes on top seed Alina Korneeva (RUS).

Day 4

20:10 - EIGHT QUARTERFINALISTS FROM EIGHT NATIONS IN KLOSTERS

Marco Keller has our nightly round-up from the European 18 & Under Championships:

The days in Klosters show the great depth of the continental tennis scene. Eight players from eight nations still have a chance for a medal in the boys’ draw, while six countries are represented in the quarterfinals of the girls’.

To the joy of the numerous local supporters the fairy tale story of the tournament is written by a Swiss. Dylan Dietrich, the number 323 in the ITF ranking, has been raising to the occasion. In the third round he had scored the biggest win of his young career by eliminating Miguel Gomes, the number 58 in the ranking. On Thursday, he confirmed by beating Ainius Sabaliauskas of Lithuania in a tense three-setter. “I wouldn’t have imagined to be in the quarters but now I’ll do everything to get a medal”, he said. Between him and the precious medal stands Bor Artnak, the 13th seed from Slovenia.

According to the ranking, the clear favourite to win the title is now Viacheslav Bielinskyi. The second seed from the Ukraine, who is yet to drop a set, squares off against Liam Gavrielides of Germany.

In the girls draw, second seed Diana Shnaider of Russia was taken out in straights by Alina Granwehr. The Swiss almost were responsible for a double shocker as Sebastianna Scilipoti put on a great fight versus top-seed Elsa Jacquemot of France. The number 2 in the ITF ranking, last year’s winner at Roland Garros, finally prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. She will play on Friday against Polina Iatcenko, one of two remaining Russians in the field. Also the traditionally strong Czechs still have two medal hopefuls. Linda Fruhvirtova was on the brink of defeat versus Spaniard Lucia Llinares Domingo but eventually came through 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Linda Noskova beat Lucija Ciric Bagaric of Croatia 7-6, 6-3.

16:00 - 18 & UNDER UPDATE

As singles play draws to a close for the day in Klosters, there's a few more key results to note:

Girls

(1) Elsa Jacquemot (FRA) d. (14) Sebastianna Scilipoti (SUI) 6-3 5-7 6-4
(3) Linda Fruhvirtova (CZE) d. Lucia Llinares Domingo (ESP) 4-6 7-6(7) 6-3
(4) Linda Noskova (CZE) d. Lucija Ciric Bagaric (CRO) 7-6(5) 6-3

Boys

(2) Viacheslav Bielinskyi (UKR) d. Daniil Ostapenko (BLR) 6-4 6-2
(8) Petr Nesterov (BUL) d. (10) Kalin Ivanovski (MKD) 6-3 6-4
Liam Gavrielides (GER, pictured below) d. (9) Adam Jurajda (CZE) 6-2 7-6(3)

13:30 - SECOND SEED OUT IN MOST AS CZECHS ADVANCE

Following the loss of the girls' second seed in Klosters, her counterpart in Most is also out. Home player Tereza Valentova cruised after winning a first set tie break to score a 7-6(5) 6-2 win over Bulgaria's Rositsa Dencheva. Valentova joins Czech compatriots Eliska Forejtkova and Alina Kovackova in the quarterfinals.

12:40 - ITALIAN DUO CONTINUE FINE FORM

Having teamed up in doubles to win the 14 & Under Summer Cups title for Italy, followed by a Category 1 title together in La Baule last week, Federico Cina and Andrea De Marchi are arguably the hot favourites for doubles gold in Most.

On Thursday, both continue their good form in singles too. De Marchi upset 16th seed Tim Vaisman (ISR) 6-2 6-1, while sixth seed Cina won his 19th consecutive Junior Tour match with a 6-3 6-2 victory over 11th seed Justin Engel (GER).

11:45 - GRANWEHR SHOCKS SECOND SEED SHNAIDER IN KLOSTERS

Home hope Alina Granwehr (pictured, below) is going from strength to strength: after two three-set battles in her previous matches, the Swiss player conceded just five games to Russia's Diana Shnaider on Thursday. Her reward for a win over the second seed is a quarterfinal match against Turkey's Aysegul Mert.

09:25 - PLAYERS CONTINUE QUEST FOR MULTIPLE GOLDS

As play begins on Thursday, there are five players - four of them Czechs - in action in Klosters who have a chance of securing a second European Championships gold medal. Let's take a look at their chances:

Adam Jurajda & Daniel Siniakov (CZE) won the doubles gold at the 16 & Under event in Moscow in 2019. seeded #6, they face Lithuanian pair Vilius Gaubus & Ainus Sabaliauskas today.

Linda Noskova has two chances: she won the singles and doubles (with fellow Czech Linda Fruhvirtova) golds in Most in 2018. Meanwhile Diana Shnaider (RUS) will look to follow up her 16 & Under doubles gold medal won in Moscow in 2019. Interestingly, Nosokova and Shnaider are top seeds in the doubles. Despite being from separate nations, they are able to play together due to an odd number of players from each nation: will they help each other to achieve a rare feat at the European Junior Championships?

Players to have managed to win one more than one gold medal in the past include legends of the game such as Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, and - more recently - Grigor Dimitrov and Iga Swiatek.

Photo: Swiatek celebrating her 14&U doubles win with Maja Chwalinska (POL) in 2015. They also won the 16&U title the next year, while Swiatek also won the singles in 2015 and was runner up in 2016.

19:25 - CHELSEA FONTENEL SCORES IMPRESSIVE REVENGE

Over to our correspondent Marco Keller for a round-up of the day's action at the 18 & Under Championships in Klosters:

Three Swiss girls advanced into the round of 16 in Klosters, and all face tough opponents again on Thursday.

Chelsea Fontenel (ITF 68) only conceded four games in a 6-2 6-2 win versus Hungary's Natalia Szabanin (ITF 12), the number five seed in the draw. The Swiss, who has been making huge progress since she moved to the IMG Academy in Florida, stayed focused until the very last point. She knew she had to, as she had previously lost twice to the lefthander, most recently at the last Orange Bowl after failing to convert a match point. In the Round of 16, she’ll measure up against Russian 11th seed Alina Shcherbinina of Russia.

There will be a second clash between the hosts and Russia: Alina Granwehr (ITF 99) challenges Diana Shnaider, the number 2 in the draw. The Swiss prevailed in a nailbiter versus Fatima Ingrid Amartha Keita. The Romanian was betrayed by her powerful serve in the last moments: At 5-6 15-15 in the decider, she handed Granwehr the match with three straight double faults.

Sebastianna Scilipoti, the fourteenth seed, came convincingly atop Ozlem Uslu from Turkey and will have a mouthwatering all-french-speaking contest on Thursday versus top-seed Elsa Jacquemot of France, a silver medallist at the 16 & Under Championships two years ago.

It wasn’t a good day for the German ladies. Sixth-seeded Mara Guth was eliminated after a close contest by Aysegul Mert of Turkey. And Julia Middendorf, the number 7 seed, lost with the identical score - 6-7, 5-7 - to Antonia Ruzic from Croatia.

Germany found consolation in the Boys draw, however. Liam Gavrielides won a tough three-setter versus fifth-seed Alexander Orlikowski of Poland. His next opponent is Adam Jurajda from Czech Republic.

17:00 - JUNIOR MASTERS CHAMPIONS MARCH ON

2018's 16 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Masters champions are progressing well into the next phase of their careers, and both posted wins to reach the last 16 in Klosters (pictured). Antonia Ruzic (CRO) beat German seventh seed Julia Middendorf 7-6(4) 7-5, while Petr Nesterov (BUL) stopped Switzerland's Jan Sebesta 7-5 6-2.

14:55 - IONESCU OUSTS HOME HOPE SLAMENIKOVA

Eva-Maria Ionescu of Romania ended the singles run of Czech Marie Slamenikova in Most, upsetting the fourth seed 7-6 6-3 to improve to 2/0 lifetime against her higher-ranked rival. Ionescu has been one of the Tour's in-form players in recent weeks, winning the Cat.1 event in Burgas, Bulgaria, and playing up to win a first 16 & Under title, in Curtea de Arges.

13:15 - SECOND SEED DEREPASKO OUT TO HEDE

An upset to start the day in Most, where Sweden's Ludvig Hede has beaten Europe's #2 Timofey Derepasko (RUS) 6-1 6-2. Hede has one Category 2 title (in Lodz) to his name this season, plus two runner-up spots. Could this be his big breakthrough?

Day 2

21:10 - SEEDS FALL IN KLOSTERS

Over to Marco Keller for our daily summary from 18 & Under event in Switzerland:

Tuesday saw the biggest local hope fall in his first match in Klosters. Top-seed Jérôme Kym lost in straight sets to Romanian Vlad Cristian Breazu. He was not the only high-profile casualty on Day 2 of the European Junior Championships.

A recent quarter-finalist at The Championships in Wimbledon, Kym had travelled with high hopes to the Swiss mountains. However, the top-seed faced a tough opponent in his opening match. Breazu had beaten Indrek Soome of Finland in the opening round and was already used to match conditions in the altitude. The player from Romania is enormously quick on his feet and therefore was able to counter Kym’s power by chasing almost every single ball down. Trailing 6-4 2-1 with a break against him, the youngest Swiss Davis Cup player ever showed his strong fighting spirit to come back. However, we was broken again in the seventh game and the number 215 in the ITF ranking managed to complete the biggest upset so far.

Overall, despite this setback it was still another good day at the office for the Swiss. Sebastianna Scilipoti started the day in the best possible way by losing only three games to Greek Dimitra Pavlou. Later, Jan Sebesta made even shorter work of Maltas Matthew Griscti and then Mika Brunold came through in a tough three-setter versus Ivan Sodan from Croatia. So, on Wednesday, six of the eight members of the Swiss team will try to advance to the Round of 16.

It was a tough day for the top players and the Spanish boys were responsible for eliminating two seeded opponents after three-set fights. Pedro Rodenas came atop Peter Privara, the number 4 seed from Slovak Republic, while Miguel Perez Pena beat Erik Arutiunian from Belarus, who was the number 15 of the tournament. Third seed Maks Kasnikowski is also out. The player from Poland was taken out in the final set tiebreak by Jaime Faria of Portugal. The rain of upsets leaves second seed Viacheslav Bielinskyi of Ukraine as the only survivor of the Top 4 seeds.

Day 1

21:00 - PERFECT START FOR SWISS HOSTS

Day 1 round up from our correspondent Marco Keller in Klosters:

Three matches, three wins. The team of Swiss Tennis couldn’t have asked for a better start into the European Junior Championships Under 18 in Klosters.

Alina Granwehr set the tone for the day in the beautiful setting of Klosters. On Centre Court, the number 98 in the ITF ranking, who turned 18 a few days ago, made herself a nice birthday present. She beat 16th seed Johanne Christine Svendsen (ITF 51) from Denmark 6-1 6-7 6-4. The result could have been clearer as Granwehr quickly raced to a 6-1 4-2 lead, but then her offensive opponent found her way back into the match. However, the Swiss reduced the number of errors in the last three games, and eventually prevailed.

Later, Dylan Dietrich won a 3-hour-battle against Dragos Nicolae Cazazcu from Romania. For the Swiss it was a further proof of his progress. He had secured himself the ticket to Klosters with good performances in recent weeks, especially a runner-up showing at the Swiss junior championships.

In the late afternoon, Chelsea Fontenel made quick work of her Swedish opponent Julia Lovqvist. The 17-year-old, who has made huge progress since working at the IMG Academy in Florida, lost only five games on the way to the win. Her only problem came when closing out but she eventually did so after the seventh match point.

The highest casualty of the first day was Martin Katz. The number 11 seed from Belgium was beaten soundly by Isac Stromberg of Sweden.

17:15 - FIRST SEED OUT IN MOST

Spain's Eugenia Menendez Zozaya has caused the first upset of the 14 & under event, recovering from a 1-6 first set loss to edge Yuliya Perapekhina (BLR) 6-2 7-5. It's been a good day for Spain, with the full squad - including Neus Torner Sensano, Andres Santamarta Roig and Sergio Planella Hernandez (pictured) all safely through to the second round.

14:25 - SWISS PLAYER SCORES FIRST UPSET IN KLOSTERS

The first seed has exited in Klosters, where home hope Alina Granwehr delighted the local fans by outlasting Denmark's Johanne Christine Svendsen 6-1 6-7(3) 6-4.  Her reward is a third round match with Romania's Fatima Keita, a 6-1 6-1 winner over Sara Mikaca (BIH).

12:30 - FIRST RESULTS FROM MOST

With the top seeds not due to play their first matches until Tuesday, today's first round matches provide a chance for the winners to battle one of the Tour's top names.

Finland's Linus Lagerbohm, at #23 one of the the top unseeded players, got past Croatia's Anton Stipetic 6-3 6-4 to set up a match with second seed Timofey Derepasko (RUS). Another promising unseeded player is Paolo Angeli. The Slovenian, who shares a name with Tennis Europe's first president, overcame Artsiom Marazau (BLR) in three sets and will next play fourth seed Egor Pleshivtsev (RUS).

Preview

14 & Under

18.07.2021 With eight of the Top Ten boys and girls due to be in action, the European 14 & Under Championships make a welcome return to Most (CZE) after a break in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Italy’s boys squad look hot favourites to keep their recent Summer Cups run of success going. Having won last week’s Category 1 title in La Baule, Federico Cina and Andrea de Marchi will be confident of doubles success, not least due to Cina’s current 23-match win streak. Add to that back-to-back singles titles and the Palermo native looks to be the player to beat.

Russia has also fielded their top guns, with European #2 Timofei Derepasko and Egor Pleshivtsev, who has won more titles than any other top player this year competing in the boys’ event. Girls’ #1 Alina Korneeva and #6 Ksenia Smirnova will also be among the title favourites.

Germany’s Justin Engel found form last week, winning in Paris and girls’ runner-up, compatriot Julia Stusek, is the current 14 & Under Race to Monte-Carlo leader, so they will be keen to make an impression in Most.

Other prolific names from the Junior Tour this season include local hope and boys’ top-ranked Maxim Mrva, winner of the Khimki Super Category event, as well as fifth-ranked compatriot Jan Kumstat. Girls #6 Marie Slamenikova leads the Czech girls’ squad. Many Czech players have won the girls’ title in age category, but just one has done so in the 15 editions played on home soil – Linda Noskova in 2018.

18 & Under

From correspondent Marco Keller in Klosters:

The last few weeks and days were stressful and even nervewracking for Hans Markutt. The tournament director and his crew had prepared the 24th edition of the EJC as diligently as ever, but then emails with negative content started coming in. Several high quality players withdrew because of the ten day quarantine they would have had to undertake after leaving Great Britain, where they had competed at the Championships in Wimbledon. For some of them it was simply not possible as they ran out of time. Among the defaulting players were all the French Boys, Swede Leo Borg and ITF number 1 Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva from Andorra

.

The Girls draw still features four Top Ten players with World Number 2 Elsa Jacquemot leading the field. Her main challengers are supposed to be Russian Diana Snaider (ITF 4), Prodigy Linda Fruhvirtova (ITF 6) and fellow Czech Linda Noskova (ITF 9).

In the Boys draw all Swiss eyes will be fixed on Jérôme Kym. The youngest Davis Cup player in the history of Swiss Tennis is the number one seed. The conditions in the altitude should benefit his offensive game, which is based on a powerful serve. Chances are good that Switzerland can increase their medal tally at the home event: As of now, they have accumulated 27 medals in 23 editions. The last ones however date back to 2018.

Singles matches start Monday morning at 9am, in the afternoon also the first encounters in doubles will take place.
