Lyubov Pronenko and Rafael Papoian have won this year’s 14&U Category 1 tournament in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, joining hallowed names such as Rafael Nadal (ESP), Linda Noskova (CZE), Qinwen Zheng (CHN), Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) and Andrei Rublev on the champions’ honour roll.
Girls’ Final
Lyubov Pronenko def Olivia Serena Conticello (ITA) 6-4 6-7 6-4
Pronenko bettered her result from the recent Svedala Open in Sweden where she reached the semis, upsetting three seeded players on her way to the final including Nicole Kurylova (14, CZE) in the quarters, who had previously defeated top seed Edurne Tortajada (ESP). The Italian qualifier defeated several seeds on her giant-killing run including Lara Sebastia (15, ESP), Adwita Das Banerjee (11, IND) and Kristyna Nikodymova (2, CZE).
The final lasted almost three hours, with Conticello saving three match points, but it was the Russian who let out the roar of victory as her opponent’s loopy lefty crosscourt forehand sailed long.
Boys’ Final
Rafael Papoian def Timo Monier Vinard (FRA) 6-2 6-2
It was a great tournament for the 14th seeded local notching an upset win over the top seed Anastasis Mosaikos (CYP) in the round of 16. The number three seeded Russian also got some big results, including wins over sixth-seeded compatriot Arsey Barkou and 11th seed Noah Honsberger (SUI).
Having not dropped a set en route to the final, Papoian also kept a clean sheet in the final over-powering and out-finessing his French opponent. An unreturned first serve sealed the deal for Papoian, who has now won his third Junior Tour title and first for the season.
