Tennis Europe events suspended until 13 July

Tennis Europe has announced that all tournament activity in Europe is suspended until the week of 13th July.

The decision follows today’s announcement of the cancellation of The Championships at Wimbledon and the news that the ITF, ATP and WTA will suspend their tours until the same date in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This means the suspension of an additional five weeks of scheduled Tennis Europe Junior Tour events, including the cancellation of the 14 & Under European Summer Cups competition, which had attracted entries from a record 72 national teams. A total of 210 Junior Tour events have now been suspended between 9th March and 12th July.

In addition, the European Senior Championships, which was due to be held in June in Pörtschach (AUT), will be postponed to a date to be confirmed.

The organisation will continue to assess the situation and to act in alignment with the sport’s governing body, the International Tennis Federation.

Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl commented, “The health and safety of our players and anyone involved with our events will always be of paramount importance. We are disappointed to announce this further postponement, which affects some of our longest running and most popular events. We will continue to assist the organisers of our junior tournaments, though our ability to do so will be best guided once we know the duration of the crisis and when the professional tours resume, which at this point remains unknown."
