2012 Tennis Europe Junior Tour Now Underway

The first Tennis Europe Junior Tour rankings of 2012 have been published, and with players born in 1995 and 1997 switching to 18 & Under and 16 & Under categories respectively, there are some massive changes.

14 & Under

The 14 & Under rankings see some of the biggest changes, with most members of the boys’ Top Ten climbing fifty places or more as a result of the new year. Kenneth Raisma of Estonia (pictured) is the exception. Having been on the cusp of the Top Ten for much of the past year, he climbs 16 places to reach #1 ahead of Ukraine’s Denys Klok (top seed at this week’s event in Russia) and Samuel Sippel (GER).

A winner last year in Ulm and Angra do Heroismo, Olga Fridman jumps 12 spots to claim the #1 spot for Ukraine ahead of Nikolina Jovic (BIH) and the in-form Karine Sarkisova (RUS), who looks sure to make an early challenge for the top, having won 32 of her last 36 matches to end the 2011 season in fine style.

16 & Under

Alexander Lebedyn of Ukraine jumps two spots to take over as the Boys 16 & Under #1, ahead of Cyprus’ Petros Chrysochos. Bogan Borza (ROU), who finished last season as the 14 & Under #1, already has his eye on the 16&U top spot at #3. Andrey Rublev (RUS), another 14 & Under Player of the Year, leaps 14 places to enter the Top ten at #9.

The girls’ list is led by 16-year old Ashleigh Barty of Australia, who is already making waves on the professional circuits, and won her first WTA doubles match in Brisbane earlier this week. Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, a former 14 & Under #1 leaps 38 spots to claim second place, while Junior Masters runner-up Ioana Rosca (ROU) is third.

Tour Round-up

The final event to be played in 2011 concluded on New Year’s Day. The Open des 10-12 in Boulogne-Billancourt has a long history of producing champions that go on to have great careers. This year’s boys winner Alexey Zakharov (RUS) fought his way past six opponents, including Tomas Machac (CZE), who he beat in a tough final 3-6 6-0 6-4. Another Czech reached the girls’ final, as Lucie Kankova was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Ukraine’s Oleksandra Andrieieva. A day earlier, Kankova had teamed with compatiot Anna Kynclova to take the girls’ doubles title, while Zakharov had partnered Leonid Sheyngezikhit (RUS) to capture their first title together (a fifth doubles win of the season for Zakharov).

The 2012 Tennis Europe Junior Tour is already underway with two 14 & Under events taking place this week. The Category 2 Christmas Cup is being held in Mytischi, Russia, and the Category 3 Beograd Open in Serbia.
