Masarova starts strong in Klosters

On Day 2 in Klosters, all eyes were glued to Rebeka Masarova, and the great new Swiss hopeful fulfilled expectations.

With a semifinal at the Australian Open and four months later the title at Roland Garros, Masarova has left her mark on the junior circuit this year. And she impressed just as much last week, when she beat three consecutive Top 100 players (Jankovic, Kontaveit, Beck) in her first event on the WTA tour at Gstaad.

Three days after her run had come to an end in the semi-finals, she picked up where she had left off. On a Centre Court filled almost to capacity, she was in charge most of the time versus her Greek opponent Magdalini Adaloglou. After an even start - 3-3, deuce - Masarova began to dominate and rushed to 6-3, 6-1 win. “I m very happy to be here and to represent Switzerland”, she said in an interview with a local TV station. On Wednesday, her next opponent will be Russian Ekaterina Vishnevskaya (ITF 260).

Masarova is the only girl to remain holding the Swiss flag in Singles, after her four teammates were eliminated in their opening match. It’s different with the Boys, with Luca Keist, Mirko Martinez and  Marko Osmakcic all reaching the third round. Osmakcic gave a promising display versus 11th seed Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Finn Bass was responsible for the upset of the day. The young Brit, a hitting partner for Andy Murray during the Wimbledon tournament, eliminated Mate Valkusz, the number 2 seed, from Hungary in straight sets. Most of the other favourites, including top-seeds Stefanos Tsitsipas and Olesya Pervushyna, cruised through their opening matches.

There were some big shocks at the European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow, as the boys third, fourth and fifth seeds, Lucas Krainer (AUT), Timofey Skatov (RUS) and Alexander Zgirovsky (BLR) lost to Jaimee Floyd Angele (FRA), Yanki Erel (TUR) and Clement Tabur (FRA) respectively. Seventh seed Varvara Gracheva of Russia was the biggest casualty on the girls’ side, losing to Greece’s Emmanouela Antonakis 6-4 6-1. Rain once again plaved havoc with the schedule, with several matches being postponed until Wednesday.

There were very few surprises at the 14 & Under event in Pilsen, Czech Republic. Spain’s Mario Gonzalez Fernandez scored an impressive 7-5 6-3 win over fourth seed Nicholas Ionel (ROU), whilst home hope Jaroslav Smedek upset Les Petits As finalist Borna Devald of Croatia for the loss of just six games.
