Zheng and Voisin claim Pont des Generations titles

The highlight of this week’s events was the Pont des Generations Category 1 16 & Under competition in southern France. This tournament of substantial prestige is now in its 27th year, and was once again able to attract a slew of international players to the clay courts of Villeneuve-Les-Avignon.

In the boys’ draw, top-seeded Daniil Glinka of Estonia made his way to the final relatively unscathed. He did face some resistance, being forced to seven games in a set on three separate occasions, but still managed to advance without losing a set. The bottom half of the draw, however, was another story as the second seed, Terence Atmane, lost in the second round to wildcard recipient and countryman Lucas Gueymard-Wayenburg. His joy was short-lived though, as he was immediately taken out by another French boy, this time a qualifier, Emilien Voisin, who continued his amazing run all the way to the final having won all his matches in straight sets. So, the final showdown was set between the number one seed and the local qualifier. Fittingly, the players slogged out their first three-set match of the tournament, and were inseparable in the first set, which was finally taken by Glinka by just two points in a tie-break. Voisin means “neighbour” in French, and with the support of the home crowd, the French player slowly turned things around. One break of serve was all he needed to clinch the second set 6-4, while victory in the third set clinched him the title on home soil.

A similar fate awaited the girls’ number one seed Helene Pellicano of Malta. Storming through all her matches for the loss of just 3 games in each match (four in Round 3), the reigning Tennis Europe Junior Masters 14 & Under champion came up against an in-form Qinwen Zheng in the final. Zheng had also progressed comfortably to the final and continued to display the form that had taken her to two previous victories this year. The final was an anti-climax of sorts, with Zheng securing her third title from as many finals this year with a 6-2 6-1 victory.

It was a sweet sweep for Voisin in the boys’ doubles as he teamed with countryman Adrien Straub to take the title, while there was some consolation for Pellicano, as she took the girls’ title alongside Maria Novikova.

At the Category 2 Lipeaja International Tournament in Latvia, Russians dominated in the singles. Top seed Egor Agafonov took the boys’ titles, without dropping a set, while the girls’ champion was Maria Shusharina, who upset the number one seed in the final.  In the boys’ doubles, the title went to Anton Arzhankin of Russia and Maks Kasnikowski of Poland while the girls’ winners were Yeva Avetisyan of Armenia and local player Elza Tomase.
