Players shine at Category 1 events in Biella and Bucharest

The Category 1 “Torneo U16 Biella” was held in Italy over the past week.  The small town outside of Milan hosted some familiar names, along with a host of local players. The Italian boys were dominant in their draws, while their female counterparts less so.

Something of a fairytale was written for Italian qualifier David Tortora who entered the event thanks to a wildcard from the organisers. Tough two set victories in the early rounds led to a semis match up against compatriot Riccardo Di Nocera. Tortora took him out in three tough sets and set up a final clash against top seed local Giulio Zeppieri. The favourite had won his previous matches in straight sets and then proceeded to receive similar treatment in the final, with the unheralded Tortora surprisingly handing the number 1 seed a 6-2 6-4 loss for the title. In the doubles, another local, Lorenzo Rottoli, teamed with Pole Dawid Taczla to take home the silverware, beating Italian pair Alessandro Bordone & Simone Camposeo in the final.

In the girls’ draw, Italian Alice Amendola took out top seeded Ukrainian Victoriya Petrenko in the second round. Her joy was short-lived however, as she fell at the next hurdle and thus opened the way for Bosnian seventh seed Laura Tomic to proceed to the final. There, she met second seeded  Helene Pellicano of Malta who, after a three-set struggle in the first round, progressed to the final with ease. There was to be no exception in the final, as reigning Junior Masters champion Pellicano dismissed Tomic for the loss of just three games. In the doubles, Petrenko maintained some pride as the top seed there, taking the title with Swiss Katerina Tsygourova, overcoming local Enola Chiesa and Pellicano who, it has to be said, had a standout tournament.

The Dr Oetker Junior Trophy in Bucharest, Romania, was the Category 1 event of the week for 14 and Unders. There were no huge shocks as all of the top four boys’ seeds made it to the final. Viktor Jovic, seeded third, took out top seeded Romanian Nicholas David Ionel easily in the semi, but then succumbed to second seed Israeli Alexander Gaponenko 2-6 6-3 6-2 in the final. Jovic made up for his disappointment by taking out the doubles title with Dane Holger Rune.

The girls’ draw was less straightforward. Top seeded Spaniard Marta Custic advanced to the final for the loss of just 18 games in four rounds, which included a double bagel victory along the way. She was given unexpected trouble in the form of eighth seeded Romanian Raluca Maria Tudorache. It started off well for the top seed, but a break of serve in the second and third sets was all that was needed for the Romanian to win 4-6 6-3 6-4. As did Jovic in the boys’, Custic did go home with a trophy after she and her partner, Bulgarian Daniella Dimitrova, were handed a walkover victory in the final.

There were also three Category 2 events this week. In Chisinau, Moldova the 16 and Unders hit town for the “Childrens’ Day Cup”. Unseeded Romanian Alexander Simion had victories over the sixth, second and fifth seed on his way to the final. His run was not over as he easily dispatched the number one seed, Oleksiy Shestakov, 6-2 6-1 for the title.  Shestakov did, however, win the doubles event with compatriot Dmytro Yeremenko. The girls’ final was clash of the top two seeds. Eventually the second seeded Russian Oksana Selekhmeteve won over Carmen Roxana Manu 7-6(6) 6-1. Manu and compatriot Maria Neacsu also won the doubles trophy.

The 14 and Unders  played their Category two events in Italy and Hungary. In the “Torneo U14 Corregio”, Italian players swept the board in three of four events. Matilde Paoletti won the girls’ event as the top seed. Luca Nardi and Alessio Tramontin combined to win the boys’ doubles, while Vittoria Modesti and Arianna Zucchini claimed the girls’ doubles title. Danish top seed Elmer Moller prevented an Italian clean sweep by winning the boys’ singles event.  At The Pecs Junior Tennis Cup in Hungary, there was indeed a virtual clean sweep for local players. Zsombor Velcz won the boys’ singles, as well as the doubles with Ivan Noel Hornug. Luca Janosi was the girls’ singles champion, while Amarissa Kiara Toth teamed with Austrian Anna Gross to win the girls’ doubles.
