Tennis Europe Junior Tour Round-up

This week saw another slather of junior events across Europe. No doubt the category 1 events XIV Torneig Joan Mir "In Memoriam" and the 23rd Piestany Cup U14 2016 were the highlights for the 16 and 14 & Unders respectively.

Spring showed up, as sun-drenched Spain played host to week’s leading 16 & Under event. The XIV Torneig Joan Mir ‘In Memoriam’ was held on hardcourt in Torelló, ninety minutes north of the Catalan capital Barcelona. Understandably, the draws were teeming with local players, but not all the results went their way.

In the boys’ events, three out of the four singles semi-finalists were locals. The second seeded Turk Kuzey Cekirge was forced to retire in his first round match, thus opening up his half of the draw. This allowed eight-seeded Alejandro Serret Agelet de Saracibar to advance to the final after some toughly fought three set victories. It was top seeded Italian Giulio Zeppieri however, who took the final 6-2 6-3, having won all his matches in straight sets, and all of them against Spanish players. In the doubles, Cekirge and his partner had to give a walkover to their opponents, Bruno Pujol & Pol Sánchez, in the quarter finals. The Spanish pair capitalised, winning their semi, but falling at the last hurdle to hand victory in the final to fellow Spaniard Antonio Muniz and his Russian partner Bekkan Atlangeriev 6-2 7-5.

The number three seeded girl, Daniela Medvedeva defeated top-seeded French player Carole Monnet in their semi-final. She met Spanish player Marta Custic in the final and the two played out a tough three-setter, with the Russian winning 7-6(5) 5-7 6-4 to claim her first tour title.  There was some consolation for Custic, however, in an all-Spanish doubles final. She teamed with Marta Del Pino Matruano to defeat Jordan Ortega & Eva Fernznadez 6-2 6-2  for the title.

For the 14 and Unders, the The 23rd Piestany Cup in Slovakia saw some familiar names. Pole Dawid Taczala made it through to the semi-finals where he went out to the Czech eventual champion,  Dalibor Svrcina. The top seed easily won the final over his compatriot Vitek Horak, 6-1 6-1. Svrcina no doubt went home twice as happy, as he also took the doubles title. Teaming up with fellow Czech Lucas Vakulik, the pair duelled against Taczala and Mikolaj Lorens for a 4-6 6-4 10-3 win. The girls event saw number nine seed Ziva Falkner upset top seeded Slovak Romana Cisovska in 3-6 6-4 6-0. This was the Slovenian’s first tournament win and comes off the back of her runner-up placing in the Rakovnik tournament. Meanwhile the doubles title went to the Czech pairing of Denisa Hunova & Tereza Vajsejtlova.

In the Ukraine and Slovenia there were also two combined 16 and 14 & Under Category 2 events this week. The Antei Cup took place in Kiev, where the draws were dominated by Ukrainians, with visiting players from Belarus, Russia, Latvia and other neighbouring nations. Locals ended up winning almost all of the events; in the 16 & Unders, the boys’ singles winner was Olekseii Krutykh. The girls’ singles champion was Anna Martemyanova, who also won the doubles with Aleksandra Pisareva. The boys’ doubles went to Belorussian pair Artsiom Bardzin & Danii KhitrouOleksiy Shestakov won the boys 14 & Under boys’ singles, as well as doubles with Viacheslav Bielinskyi. The girls’ 14 & Under singles titles went to Lyubov Kostenko, while Beilorussians Anastasiya Komar & Ekaterina Tikhonko were able to prevent a Ukrainian whitewash by winning the doubles.

In Maribor, Slovenia, the Category 2 Grawe Open saw plenty of Swiss dominance. The 16 & Under boys’ winner was top seed Luca Staeheli, who teamed up with the compatriot he vanquished in the singles final, Yannik Steinegger, to then win the doubles. The girls’ singles winner was Serbian Elena Milavanovic, while Hungarians Fanny Gecsek & Adrienn Nagy won the doubles. In the 14 & Under events, Jeffrey Von Der Schunlenburg mirrored compatriot’s Staeheli’s accomplishments with twin victories, teaming with fellow Swiss player Leandro Riedi in the doubles. Slovenian Pia Lovric won the girls’ singles, with the doubles title going to another Swiss pairing, Melody Hefti & Sophie Luescher.

The final Category 2 event for the week took place in Poland, at the Opalenica Cup. Although there were a large number of Poles, an array of participants from further afield gave the event a more international feel and that was also reflected in the winners’ lists.  Czech third seed Martin Krumich won the boys’ singles final against Belgian Romain Faucon 6-2 6-4. German qualifier Eva Lys took home the girls’ single trophy, overcoming second seeded Victoriya Kanapatskaya after the Belorussian retired from the match at 3-1 down in the third set. The doubles trophies went to Dutch pair Frank Jonker & Thijmen Loof in the boys’ while another Dutch player, Bente Spee, teamed with Czech Marketa Panackova to win the girls’ doubles.
