Swiss roll on in Klosters

The host nation is still making its mark on the European 18 & Under Championship in Klosters. After winning all twelve of their matches in the opening round, the Swiss realized seven wins on Wednesday.

The biggest upset was caused by Henry Von der Schulenburg. The tall right-hander eliminated Dalibor Svrcina, the number 3 seed from the Czech Republic with the score of 6-4 7-6. Number 6 seed Arnaud Bovy from Belgium also bowed out in the round of 32, losing in straight sets to Ukrainian Oleksii Krutykh und Dutchman Deney Wassermann, the number 5 in the draw, lost a close encounter to Spaniard Alex Martinez.

The highest casualty in the women’s draw was Yasmine Mansouri from France. The number 7 seed couldn’t convert a one set lead versus Fiona Ganz and eventually lost 7-5 0-6 4-6. The newly crowned Swiss champion will next face Emmanouela Antonakis of Greece, who made short work of Adrienn Nagy, the number 10 seed from Hungary.

Over in the Czech town of Most, the European 14 & Under Championships saw mixed results for their host nation: in the girls’ event fifth seed Agata Cerna was upset by Finland’s Laura Hietaranta for the loss of just three games, but Linda Fruhvirtova (#2) and Barbara Palicova (#3) advanced easily. Oldrich Vejsicky scored a notable win in the boys’ singles, ousting in-form ninth seed Niccolo Ciavarella of Italy 6-2 6-3 6-0. The day’s biggest shock saw top seeded Russian and European #1 Mikhail Gorokhov beaten convincingly by unseeded Kalin Ivanovski (MKD), a winner at the Development Championships earlier this season.
