Upsets begin on Day 2 of European Junior Championships

The home flag flew proudly on Day 2 of the European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters, with all 8 Swiss representatives winning their matches. Only two seeded players were upset in the girls’ tournament, both by local players. Simona Waltert lost just seven games in victory over sixth seeded Selma Cadar (ROU), while Joanne Zuger survived a second set tie break to oust fourth seed Margaryta Bilokin (UKR) 6-2 7-6(5). Incredibly, the entire second round of 32 matches saw just one three-set encounter in the girls’ draw, as Moldova’s Vitalia Stamat edged past Ilay Yoruk of Turkey in a final set tie break.

There were a couple of major upsets in the boys’ event. Gustaf Strom of Sweden stunned second seed Filip Jianu of Romania 7-6(2) 6-3, while former Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Marko Miladinovic, seeded fourth, was outlasted by Giulio Zeppieri of Italy, 3-3 6-2 6-2

The top seeds escaped mainly unscathed at the 14 & Under event in Most, Czech Republic, but home hopes were dented as sixth seed Matthew Donald lost in straight sets to Croatia’s Dino Prizmic.

There were two major upsets: France’s Sean Cuenin scored the day’s biggest win when European #2 Constantino Koshis of Cyprus was forced to retire while trailing 6-7(5) 6-3 2-0. Till Brunner of Switzerland had an equally impressive win, recovering from the brink of defeat to outlast third seeded Pole Filip Pieczonka 2-6 7-5 6-4.

Things went more smoothly on the girls’ side. European #1 and tournament favourite Diana Shnaider of Russia eased into the tournament with a 6-1 6-2 win over the only Andorran representative, Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva.
