Local players cause upsets on Day 1 in Klosters

Only two seeds lost on Day 1 of the European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters. Both were victims of members of the team from the home nation, Switzerland.

A lot of patience was required on Monday, when persistent rain forced a five-hour delay. When matches finally kicked off, the Swiss remained unfazed. First up on Centre Court, Luca Staeheli defeated number 10 seed Jesper De Jong from the Netherlands 7-5 6-1 after taking eight of the last nine games.

Then, Joanne Zuger caused an even bigger upset by beating Margaryta Bilokin 6-2 7-6. The number 4 seed from the Ukraine held one set point to force a decider but Zuger saved it with courageous play. In general, it was a perfect opening day for Switzerland, whose players took four wins in as many matches.

On Tuesday, all courts in the Swiss mountain resort will be full of action. No less than 68 singles and doubles matches are on the order of play. The weather forecast foresees a clear improvement.

Over in Most (CZE), the 14 & Under event also kicked off. No seeded players were in action on the first day, which also saw the teams gather for the opening ceremony. Photos.

Monday also saw the final day of play at the European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow (RUS), which this year were held one week prior to the other two age categories. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz Garfia and Latvia’s Kamilla Bartone were crowned as champions. Click here for a full report.
