Quarterfinals set at European Junior Championships

Germany’s Marvin Moeller continued his fine form in Moscow on Thursday, conceding just one game to sixth seed Francesco Forti of Italy as he blasted his way into the European 16 & Under Championships quarterfinals. Moeller has now beaten two seeds and lost just two games in three singles matches. He’ll next face Sweden’s Jonas Eriksson Ziverts, who ended the run of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP) after a marathon 7-6(10) 3-6 6-3 tussle.

Only three seeds remain in the boys’ competition; top seeded Czech Patrick Rikl will take on unseeded Constantin Bittoun Kouzmine in tomorrow’s quarterfinal, while second seed Mykyta Mashtakov of Ukraine faces the last remaining home player, Artem Dubrivnyy.

All of the girls’ matches were settled in straight sets on Day 4. Eliza Omirou of Cyprus ended the run of Ylena In-Albon (SUI) to set up a clash with Anna Slovakova (CZE). Shaline-Doreen Pipa of Germany upset fourth seed Eva Guerrero Alvarez (ESP) and will next face seventh seed Nefisa Berberovic (BIH).

Two Russians are on a semi-final collision course in the bottom half of the draw, should they win their next match. Fifth seed Anastasia Gasanova will face Nika Shytkouskaya of Belarus on Friday, while second seed Elena Rybakina will battle Axana Mareen of Belgium, a 6-2 6-2 winner over reigning Junior Masters champion Kristina Miletic of Serbia.

Unseeded Briton Anton Matusevich scored a big win at the 14 & Under Championships in Pilsen, outlasting top seed and European #1 Timofey Skatov 6-7(4) 6-2 7-6(5) to join compatriot Jack Draper in the quarterfinals. Both players face more tough opposition in tomorrow’s matches, with Matusevich taking on Spain’s Nicolas Alvarez Varona, a winner at the recent European Summer Cups event, and Draper facing fifth seeded Piestany champion Wojciech Marek of Poland.

Elsewhere in the draw, Mihailo Popovic of Serbia scored a second three-set win of the season over Alexander Zgirovsky (BLR) to set up a meeting with fourth seed Filip Jianu (ROU), while second seed Adrian Andreev of Bulgaria had to play just seven games against Andrew Paulson before the Czech hope retired with injury, and next faces Duje Ajdukovic of Croatia.

Several more seeds fell in the girls’ competition on Thursday. Finland’s Oona Orpana took out #11 Vanesa Nilolovova (CZE) in straight sets to set up a meeting with last week’s Windmill Cup finalist Elisabetta Cocciaretto (ITA). Mylene Halemai of France ended another Czech’s hopes with a 7-6 6-3 win over fourth seed Anna Siskova, and next faces Iga Swiatek of Poland.

In the top half of the draw, Ivana Sebestova kept the Czech flag flying with a victory over Britain’s Holly Fischer and will next face Romana Cisovska, who upset #15 Kamilla Bartone. #1 seed Taisya Pachkaleva of Russia had no problems against Turkey’s Selin Ovunc, and will play Anna Kubareva of Belarus for a place in the semifinals.
