Order restored at 14/16 & Under Championships

Wednesday saw some semblance of order restored at the European Junior Championships in Moscow and Pilsen, following an upset-filled second day. The biggest upset on Day 3 of the 16 & Under event in Moscow was third-seeded Brit Francesca Jones, who had been making her 2015 Tennis Europe Junior Tour debut, having focused on the ITF Junior Circuit in recent months. She was beaten 7-5 in the final set by Nika Shytkouskaya of Belarus, who advances to play Italy’s Tatiana Pieri in the last 16.

Just one seed fell in the boys’ competition, where the most eye-opening result saw Germany’s Marvin Moeller dispatch 11th seed Aliaksandr Liaonenka (BLR) without losing a game. Top seed Patrik Rikl of the Czech Republic dropped a set to Portugal’s Duarte Vale, and all other top seeds advanced comfortably.

As in the 16s, the girls’ third seed was also the top casualty of the day at the 14 & Under event in Pilsen (CZE), where Helene Pellicano lost in the three sets to Slovakia’s Romana Cisovska. The Maltese player, who has won several big events across two age categories so far this season, took the first set but was unable to win a game subsequently, slipping to a 3-6 6-0 6-0 defeat.

Twelfth seeded Serbian Olga Danilovic was also knocked out, taking a three-set loss to Iga Swiatek of Poland. There were no surprises in the boys’ competition, though Portuguese players went down with a fight as Bernardo Serra Vieira and Hugo Maia took sets from third seed Jack Draper (GBR) and seventh seed Nicolas Alvarez Varona (ESP) respectively.

Wednesday ended with a players’ party which saw tennis trick shot artist Stefan Bojic perform a show and invite the players on stage to show off their skills. Some great HEAD prizes were won by the participants, including a racquet signed by Richard Gasquet, a bag signed by Andy Murray and a poster signed by Maria Sharapova.
