Norway‘s Davis Cup hero falls in Klosters

Day 3 in Klosters saw the departure of number 3 seed Casper Ruud. The Norwegian Davis Cup hero lost in straight sets to Benjamin Hannestad from Denmark.

Ruud, 16 years old and the biggest hope of the classical winter sport nation since his father, who had reached number 39 in the world, had won all three of his Davis Cup matches the past weekend in straight sets. However, adapting from San Marino to the high altitude of Klosters turned out to be difficult, and he committed too many unforced errors versus his steadier opponent.

The other high-seeded players all advanced on Wednesday. Last year's finalist Corentin Denolly made short work of Armenian Mikayel Khachatryan whereas Wimbledon finalist Mikael Ymer struggled again to get past Czech Matej Vocel in three sets. Spaniard Alvaro Lopez San Martin topped Maxim Tybar from Belarus. The third day also marked the end of the Swiss male hopes with Johan Nikles being eliminated by Russian Pavel Kotov.

There was better luck for the hosts ladies, with Jil Teichmann and Susan Bandecchi advancing to the round of 16. Both of them will face stern opposition on Thursday. Teichmann squares off against Hungarian Fanni Stollar, the Wimbledon champion in doubles and Bandecchi challenges top-seed Marketa Vondrousova.

After yet another spectacular day, intense rain brought the day to a premature end. Matches resume tomorrow morning.
