Galfi and Mihalikova upset in Klosters

Day 2 in Klosters saw most of the top seeds in action. The adjustment on clay and in the altitude wasn't easy in some cases.

The first big victims came from the girls draw. Dalma Galfi, seeded number 2 and winner at Roehampton a few weeks ago, lost to Julia Rosenqvist from Sweden. And Tereza Mihalikova, the Slovak winner of the Australian Open (#5), was eliminated in straight sets by Italian Beatrice Torelli. Things were much easier for the top-ranked junior in the world, Marketa Vondrousova. The Czech easily came atop Aryna Sabalenka conceding only five games to her opponent from Belarus.

Once again, the depth in the men's draw is remarkable. The top three seeds had to be ready from the word go in order to avoid unpleasant surprises. Last years finalist Corentin Denolly lost the opening set versus Estonian Mattias Siimar before prevailing in three against the fellow lefthander. Mikael Ymer, ten days ago a finalist at the All-England Club, also conceded the first set against the Brit Ryan James Storrie and Casper Ruud also had some trouble in the second set versus Alex Knaff from Luxemburg.

The home nation saw its team reduced to three out of eight participants in singles. Five players were in action on Tuesday but only Johan Nikles (#10) advanced to the third round with a straight-sets win over Dutch Guy Den Heijer. Nikles and Mirko Martinez were also responsible for the sole swiss win in doubles. In the last match of the night, ending way past 10pm, they eliminated the Norwegian pair of Johannes Helgo/Casper Ruud after saving four match points in the champions' tiebreak.
