Wimbledon finalist Schmiedlova eliminated in Klosters

The European Championships have their first major upset. Kristina Schmiedlova, the Wimbledon finalist from Slovakia, was eliminated in her opener in three sets by Bulgarian Julia Terziyska.

Unfortunately, meteorological conditions didn’t improve at all for day 2 in Klosters. Therefore, all the matches had to be played indoor again. And the host nation’s players showed again that they feel quite at ease on the Rebound Ace in Davos. They duplicated their result from Monday and have now recorded eight wins, compared to only two losses.

Johan Nikles was responsible for a slight upset. The smart youngster from Geneva beat Daniel Appelgren, the number 11 seed from Sweden, in a high-quality match 7-6(9) 7-5. In the tiebreaker, Nikles saved three set points with courageous play. On Wednesday, the biggest task for the Swiss will be for Sarah Ottomano, who is scheduled to play the reigning Wimbledon champion and top seed Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia, who cruised through her opener.

Also for the first time in action in Davos were the three highest seeds in the boys’ draw. French Open finalist Jaume Munar advanced to the second round shortly after French hopefuls Quentin Halys and Johan Sébastien Tatlot had preceded him prevailing as well in close encounters.

On Wednesday, the weather gods should finally look more kindly on Klosters. The forecast is promising and so the organizers have scheduled no less than 70 matches on the clay courts of Klosters and Davos, in order to reduce the deficit. There will also be plenty of doubles action.
