Sunshine for the Swiss on a rainy day

Sunshine for the Swiss on a rainy day

Despite conditions that reminded more of winter than summer, almost the entire programme of day one in Klosters could be played. The host nation Switzerland had a successful start into the European 18 & Under Championships.

Jil Teichmann, the number 3 seed, and biggest local hope for a medal, faced a tough first round versus Lithuanian Justina Mikulskyte, but in the end comfortably prevailed 62 64. The lefthander showed on the Rebound Ace in Davos that she will be a contender, also against the likes of reigning Wimbledon champion Jelena Ostapenko and Kristina Schmiedlova, the finalist at the All England Club, whose opening matches are scheduled for Tuesday.

Switzerland had a perfect record in boys action with Johan Nikles and Marc-Andrea Huesler advancing to the second round, whereas Gabriele Moghini's three-set win secured him a spot in the third round already after having benefitted from a bye in the opening round. On Tuesday, also the top male contenders enter the tournament, including top-seed Jaume Munar from Spain and French players Quentin Halys and Johan Sébastien Tatlot.

Initially, 55 matches had been scheduled for the opening day. Thanks to some great organization by tournament director Hans Markutt, 44 of them could be played, using the indoor facilities of Davos, Bad Ragaz and Schaan as a substitute for the wet clay courts in Klosters. The weather forecast for day two isn’t much more promising, however, from Wednesday on the situation should improve however.
