The host nation Switzerland started with two wins and two losses into the EJC in Klosters. As the persistent rain continued, all of the second day’s matches had to be played indoors.
Swiss Under 18 champion Jakub Paul defeated Austrian Lukas Krainer in the first match of the day in straight sets. He will face a real challenge now, as his next opponent is Michael Vrbensky of Czech Republic, the fifth seed and reigning Wimbledon doubles champion. The match promises to be open as Paul has already defeated Vrbensky once on hardcourt in Malaysia. Just as challenging is the next task for Henry Von der Schulenburg, who disposed of Lithuanian Domantas Sakinis. He will next square off against the number two seed Zsombor Piros from Hungary, the number 6 in the ITF ranking.
On Wednesday all the highest seeds will start their quest of glory. Local eyes will mostly be turned to Simona Waltert, the semi-finalist in Wimbledon but also top seeds Corentin Moutet of France and Marta Kostyuk of the Ukraine will begin their campaigns. Most likely, they all will play indoors, the weather forecast is even worse than for the previous days.

There were a few shocks at the 16 & Under event in Moscow. Menanja Malesevic (BIH) swept past sixth seed Oleksiy Shestakov (UKR) for the loss of just five games. Seventh seed Peter Makk of Hungary was also beaten in straight sets, by Bora Sengul (TUR).
On the girls’ side, the host nation lost a favourite as third seed Kamilla Rakhimova was upset 6-2 7-5 by Isabella Pfennig (GER). Carlota Martinez of Spain had earlier ousted second seed Mariam Dalakishvili (GEO), leaving the girls’ event without two of the top three seeds after just the second round.
The 14 & Under event is being played in the Czech town of Most, where one of the biggest home hopes will be disappointed to have lost her opening match. Second seed Darja Vidmanova was the champion of the Category 1 16 & Under Milan event recently, but was outlasted by Julia Lovqist of Sweden, who survived a second set fightback to win 6-4 6-7(5) 6-0.
Fifth seeded Maria Timofeeva of Russia is another of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s top performers so far this season, but the Russian accrued just two games in a one-sided loss to Ukraine’s Dasha Lopatetskaya.
There were no major surprises in the boys’ draw, with Joel Pierleoni’s 6-1 6-1 win over 14th seed Tsotne Dzimistarishvili (GEO) being the most notable result.
