The finals are set at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters after an intense second day of competition at the CT Rocco Polimeni in Reggio Calabria.
The 14 & Under competition took centre stage for the morning session. Radu Papoe of Romania was first player through, losing just four games for a second consecutive day as he breezed past Denmark’s Elmer Moller.
On centre court, there were contrasting fortunes for another Dane, as Holger Rune battled back from a first set drubbing to end the hopes of home favourite Lorenzo Musetti, winning 1-6 6-3 6-4.
Federica Sacco kept hopes of an Italian title alive, coming from behind to end the run of Slovenia’s Ziva Falkner 3-6 6-4 6-4. In Sunday’s final she will face third seed Maria Tiomofeeva of Russia, who dropped just two games against Viktoriya Kanapatskaya of Belarus.
The 16 & Under players sprang into action for the afternoon session. Tamara Malesevic (pictured) of Serbia survived the toughest encounter of the day, edging past Oksana Selekhmeteva of Russia 7-6(2) 6-7(5) 6-2 in a match that lasted just over three and a half hours. She will next face Georgia’s Mariam Dalakishvili, who scored a straight sets upset of another Russian, top seed Daniella Medvedeva, to become just the second ever Georgian Junior Masters finalist.
Back on centre court, Kristijan Juhas became the second Serbian finalist with a convincing 6-0 6-3 win over Switzerland’s Yannik Steinegger. His opponent on Sunday will be Lukas Krainer of Austria, who beat Daniel Khin of Hungary 6-4 6-1 in the last match of the day to be completed.
