Day 1 Summary

The first day of action at the 2016 Tennis Europe Junior Masters saw a number of upsets, and the #1 seeds fell in three of the four categories.

Boys 14 & Under top seed Oleksiy Shestakov of Ukraine was the first to fall, scoring just four games against Radu Papoe of Romania (pictured). By contrast, Romania’s top seed in the 16 & Under event, fell to Austria’s Lukas Krainer 6-2 6-4.

Federica Sacco scored the most popular win of the day, in front of a packed centre court of local schoolchildren who cheered on their Italian compatriot’s fightback from the loss of a first set tiebreak to oust Avelina Sayfetdinova of Russia in the Girls’ 14 & Under tournament.

Daniela Medvedeva of Russia was the only one of the #1s to advance, restoring order with a 6-3 6-3 win over Elena Milovanovic, one of three Serbians in the eight-girl draw.

Elsewhere Holger Rune and Elmer Moller ensured that there would be two Danes in the boys’ 14 & Under semi-finals for the first time ever, and there were contrasting fortunes for the male players from the host nation, with Lorenzo Musetti advancing the 14 & under competition, but Giulio Zeppieri and upset victim (to late replacement Kristijan Juhas of Serbia) in the 16 & under event.

Previous winners of this exclusive tournament for the best-performing players on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour include Belinda Bencic (2011), Rafael Nadal (2000) and Kim Cliksters (1997).
