Poland took centre stage this week, hosting the only Category 1 event of the week - the Bohdan Tomaszewski Cup 16 & Under tournament in Warsaw. There were some slight upsets in the singles draws, however the doubles events stayed on-track for the top seeds.
The top seed and 14th-ranked overall 16 & Under player Roman Neganov of Russia was taken out in the semi-finals by eventual champion Alexander Zgirovsky of Belarus. The younger of the two players made light work of the top seed winning 6-3 6-1. In the final he came up against another Russian, this time it was unseeded Ivan Zaytsev. A final can be a tough test, but the youngster from Minsk saw it through with a 7-6(5) 6-2 victory for his first Category 1 trophy.
Girls’ Russian top seed Daniella Medvedeva was also shown the door. Her conqueror was unseeded Dane Clara Tauson. Her great run would continue to the podium, after also defeating third-seeded Belorussian Jana Kolodynska in the final, meaning that she had defeated seeded players in four out of her five matches on the way to the title. A very nifty result for the previous winner of some 14 & Under events.
The doubles results went to script as both pairs of top seeds won their events. Andrew Paulson & Alexander Zgirovsky won the boys’ title, while Daniella Medvedeva & Raluca Maria Tudorache were the winners in the girls’ event.
In the Category 2 16 and Under Steinfort Junior Open in Luxemburg, Germany’s Moritz Pfaff lived up to his top billing, taking out the title as the number one seed. Polish number one seed Weronika Baszak was defeated in the semi-finals by the eventual winner, fourth seeded French girl Lola Marandel. Doubles victories went to Chris Rodesch & Nicolas Weckerle as well as Weronika Baszak & Diana Nekhorosheva in the boys’ and girls’ draws respectively.
Pfaff’s win will greatly strengthen his push for a place at the Junior Masters. Having moved up three places to 8th on the list last week the German is inching ever closer to securing one of the coveted top 6 spots. Other players, despite their performances this week, are some distance from qualifying.
The 14 and Under Category 2 Juan Fuster Tournament in Spain saw many surprises. The boys’ final between the third and fourth seeded locals went the way of Mario Mansilla, while unseeded Silvia Vargas, also from Spain, won the girls’ event. Top seeded Georgia Lily Lynn Browne lost in her first match against Spanish qualifier Esther Romero. The boys’ doubles trophy went to Mansilla & Diego Barreto. Maria Dolores Lopez & Judith Perello won the trophy in the girls’ draw.
