Danilovic & Sanchez Jover strike gold in Moscow

Olga Danilovic of Serbia won the battle of the top two seeds to proclaim herself as Europe’s 2016 16 & Under champion. The second seed put in a dominant performance to beat Poland’s Iga Swiatek for the loss of just four games as she emerged a 6-3 6-1 winner, and becomes the first ever European champion for Serbia in this age category.

Swiatek had been hoping to join an elite band of players to have won multiple European Junior titles, having won the 14 & Under competition in Pilsen last year. The Pole should not be too disappointed, however, having added a silver medal to the doubles gold that she secured on Saturday alongside Maja Chwalinska when the pair brushed to a 6-0 6-0 win over Russians Varvara Gracheva & Vlada Koval in the final.

Carlos Sanchez Jover staged an astonishing fightback to beat friend and team-mate Rafael Izquierdo Luque in the first ever all-Spanish boys' singles final. Izquierdo was unstoppable in the first set, racing through the first six games before Sanchez managed to get on to the scoreboard early in the second set. From there the match was level, with Sanchez holding his nerve to claim a second set tie-break before accelerating away for a 6-2 final set win.

Both unseeded, the Spanish pair had each impressed throughout week, with Sanchez accounting for the 2nd and 13th seeds while Izquierdo despatched the event’s #1, #6 and #12 seeds en route to the final.

The previous day, eleventh seeds Jake Hersey & Aidan McHugh became the third pair of Britons ever to win the 16 & Under boys doubles title, edging to a 7-6(1) 7-5 victory over Greece’s Petros Tsitsipas & Aitor Zerdilas Herrera.

The four singles finalists – Sanchez Jover, Izquierdo Luque, Danilovic and Swiatek – are also confirmed as the first four qualifiers for this year’s Tennis Europe Junior Masters tournament, which will be held in Reggio Calabria in early October.
