After a beautiful opening ceremony in the Swiss mountains, many of the players in Klosters had to shift to ‘match mode’ on Monday, with the high seeds due to start their campaigns on Tuesday.
Breathtaking views of the mountains had made the opening ceremony on Sunday an event which most players will remember. And they will also recall the spectacular setting where they can go for medals and honours during this week. Klosters, on a sunny, warm day, like on the opening day, is definitely one of the nicest tennis venues.
Only a few seeds were called to the court on day one. The highest casualty was number 9 seed Viktoria Kuzmova from Slovakia, who was handed a straight-sets loss by unseeded but heralded Wiktoria Kulik from Poland. Anastasia Zarytska, the 12th seed from the Ukraine, just avoided an early exit by edging past Greece’s Eleni Christofi in the final set tiebreak.
There were mixed fortunes for the host nation: while all three girls, who were on schedule, bowed out, Gabriel Currlin and Marko Osmakcic impressed in the Boys draw. They will both face seeded opponents on Tuesday on Centre Court.
On Tuesday, things will heat up even more with most seeds starting into the tournament. Most eyes will be fixed on Rebeka Masarova, the French Open champion, who last week had a fairytale debut in the WTA tour by advancing to the semifinals in Gstaad and taking the scalp of former world number 1 Jelena Jankovic.
The opening day was fairly quiet at the event’s other two venues, where all seeds were able to train ready for action on Tuesday. All first round matches were completed at the 14 & Under Championships in Pilsen, but rain interrupted play at the 16 & Under Championships in Moscow, where half of the first day’s matches will be resumed tomorrow.
