Arnaboldi and Petrenko claim Avvenire titles

This week’s Category 1 spotlight shone upon Italy with Milan and Messina hosting prestigious 16 and 14 and Under events respectively. Some of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s best-performing players of the year once again made their presence felt in the biggest tournaments of the week.

The famed 16 and Under Torneo Avvenire, now in its 52nd year, has names such as Borg, Cash, Edberg, Ivanisevic, Monfils, Del Potro, Martínez, Capriati and Hingis amongst many others, etched on its honour boards of champions. Broadcast on national television, this event is a battleground for future stars and sparks interest amongst budding professional players, fans, the media and scouts alike.

Off the bat, there was an upset in the boys’ singles as Spanish wildcard Jaime Caldes took out the top seed, Italian Giulio Zeppieri in straight sets. He continued his run to the final with wins over the fifteenth, fifth and then fourth seed. His win over Czech Dalibor Svrcina (Europe’s #1 14 and Under player) in the semi-final propelled him into the final full of confidence.  In the other half of a draw choc-full of local talents, the unseeded Italian Federico Arnaboldi made his way to the final after a three-set semi-final against compatriot Riccardo Di Nocera. The final was a showdown between two unseeded players, both of whom were making their debut in finals at this level. Even though unseeded, the left-handed Spaniard perhaps had the numbers going in to the match, as he was the 2015 14 and Under champion of the Sanchez Casal tournament as well as the Gran Canaria Yellow Bowl event, so the big moments certainly do not put him off. The final was an epic match where little separated the players. The first two sets were both won 6-3 and the last set went to the wire. The nailbiting tie-break finish brought much delight to the home crowd with their player clinching it 7-3. Elated with his victory, Arnaboldi thanked the crowd, his family and his former coach from the same club where the event is held, for a somewhat poetic end to another great tournament.

The story of the girls’ draw virtually writes itself, as Ukrainian top seed Victoriya Petrenko waltzed unhampered and unhindered to her first victory of 2016.  Ranked 12th on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s 16 & Under list, Petrenko made light work of her opponents, not having dropped a set all tournament. She can also claim the honour of being the first person from her country to ever win a title here. Ranked 4th amongst the 14 and Under girls, finalist Denisa Hindova of the Czech Republic continues her rise with a finals berth. There was to be some joy for the Italians, as unseeded locals Gabriele Bosio & Gian Marco Ortenzi won the boys’ doubles while wildcard entrants Emilia Bezzo & Federica Rossi were victorious in the girls’ doubles.

Nestled on the north-eastern tip of Sicily, just across the strait of Messina from the mainland, the city of the same name played host to the Torneo 14 and Under Category 1 event.  The loss of Moldovan top seed Ilya Snitari in the third round by 13th seeded Dutch player Thijmen Loof, paved the way for Spaniard Mario Mansilla Diez. As the tenth seed, he took care of Loof in the quarter finals in straight sets. Home crowd favourite Luca Nardi, put up more resistance in the semis, pushing Mansilla to three sets. Mansilla’s opponent in the final was Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune, who had also dispatched an Italian in a tough three-set semi-final, in his case Fausto Tabacco. The final was set and went the way of the Spaniard 6-2 in the second set after edging the first in a tie-break. The girls’ draw brought a little more joy for the locals, as Federica Sacco made it to the final. She was beaten by Croatian Noa Krznaric 6-3 3-6 6-3. It was a worthy victory for the in-form Krznaric, who had earlier taken out the top seeded Estonian Carol Plakk for the loss of a mere five games.  Ilya Snitari did manage to make an impact, taking home the boys’ doubles trophy with Mikolaj Lorens. In an unfortunate turn of events for players and organisers, Plakk & Avelina Sayfetdinova won the girls’s doubles final by virtue of a walkover after their opponents had reached the final in the same manner.

The 16 and Under players also made a stop in Romania for the Category 2 Mamaia IDU Junior Championship. In the boys’ draw, 25 of 28 players and all four semi-finalists were from the host country. The title eventually went to third seed Stefan Palosi, while Carmen Roxana Manu won the girls’ event in another all-Romanian final. Defeated boys’ singles finalist, Cezar Cretu played with Matei Adrian Georgescu to take home the doubles prize, as Alicia Beatrice Ciuca and Oana Smaranda Corneanu were the champions in the girls’ doubles.

The 14 and Unders played their Category 2 event of the week in the Ukraine. In a field and podiums dominated by local players at the Chernitskaya Memorial by Babolat, honours in the boys’ singles went to top seed Oleksiy Shestakov and to Lyubov Kostenko in the girls’ singles. They teamed with Yuriy Nayden and Dasha Lopatetskaya respectively to win their doubles events. This was Shestakov’s fifth final and third win of the year in this category, to add to his runner-up berth at the 16 and Under draw at the Children’s Day Cup. He is now ranked 2nd amongst 14 and Unders and 29th overall.

Amongst the 12 & Under events to be held was the  Mouratoglou Cup - the first Tennis Europe Junior Tour event to be staged at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy since Tennis Europe and the academy launched a partnership last month. The tournament saw a hugely international field in action, with France's Cesar Bouchelaghem and Linda Fruhirtova of the Czech Republic emerging victorious.
