Top seeds through to Klosters final

Top seeds through to Klosters final

Both top seeds booked their places in the finals of the European Junior Championships in Klosters on Sunday. Clara Tauson from Denmark and Adrian Andreev from Bulgaria both advanced in straight sets to the gold medal game of the 18 & Under competition.

15-year-old Tauson overcame stiff resistance from Joanne Zuger of Switzerland, who hadn’t dropped a set on her way to the semi-finals. Zuger’s fighting spirit showed  once again, when she came back from 2-5 to 4-5 in the first set. After the first set however, the Danish player was in cruise control.

In her quest for the title she will face Maja Chwalinska of Poland. In the match of the day, the crafty lefthander eliminated the biggest hopeful of the local fans, Leonie Kung. Finalist at the All England Club two weeks ago, Kung simply refused to lose and came back several times, cheered on by the numerous spectators in the Sportzentrum, who hadn’t left Klosters despite a rain delay of three and a half hours.

The high quality matches in the boys draw saw two completely different ‘halves’. Valentin Royer of France raced away to a 5-1 lead before Andreev came back, showing exceptional skills in the transition from defense to offense and gaining in confidence with every point. Understandably, the opposite was true for Royer and in the end Andreev advanced comfortably.

A great quality match should be assured as Czech Jonas Forejtek also proved great character. He weathered the storm from unseeded Giulio Zeppieri and came back to win 2-6 6-4 6-4; a match that the Italian had been leading 6-2 3-0.

The first national anthems that were played this year were on Saturday evening those for the doubles champions of Romania and Italy. Filip Cristian Jiani & Stefan Palosi defeated Erik Grevelius & Gustaf Strom of Sweden while Elisabetta Cocciaretto & Federica Rossi came back from a set deficit to beat Selma Stefania Cadar & Andreea Prisacariu of Romania

Over at the 14 & under event in Most (CZE), local players are in with a shot of taking three of the four gold medals on offer on Sunday. The girls’ final will see top seed, European #1 and Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Diana Shnaider of Russia face home hope Linda Noskova. Both had relatively comfortable matches on Saturday, with Shnaider conceding just six games to Aliona Falei (BLR), and Noskova advancing while Anastasiya Soboleva retired while leading 6-4 1-4.

Noskova further benefitted from Soboleva’s retirement in the doubles, when she and partner Linda Fruhvirtova were given a walkover to face Falei & Eviliana Laskevich in tomorrow’s final. Czechs Hynek Barton & Matthew Donald will take on Croatian pair Mili Poljicak & Dino Prizmic in the boys’ final.

Poljicak will first play the boys singles final, when he takes on unseeded Sean Cuenin of France. Cuenin has scored a series of upsets on his way to the final but progressed more easily than expected on Saturday as opponent Luka Jovanovic (SRB) was forced to retire while trailing 2-6 0-3.

For his part, Poljicak posted his most convincing win yet, dropping just one game in each set to this year’s Development Championships winner Kalin Ivanovski.
