Favourites advance on Day 3 in Klosters

With rain continuing to disrupt the schedule at the European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters, the seeded players showed great skills in adapting to the indoor courts on Wednesday. While it poured outside, almost all the favourites qualified for the round of 32.

The highest casualty of the day was Norway’s Astrid Wanja Brune Olsen. The number 11 of the girls’ draw was eliminated on the second site in Bad Ragaz by Lithuanian Paulina Bakaite, who proved much better than her ranking of 221 on the day.

The top seeds made promising entries: French Corentin Moutet disposed of Martin Borisiouk of Belarus 6-2 7-5 but struggled in the second set more than he would have hoped. However, Moutet gave various examples of his great touch. And Marta Kostyuk, the reigning Australian Open champion was taken to a tiebreak before beating Spain’s Guiomar Maristany Zuleta de Reales 6-3 7-6. After three days, no Spanish players are left in the singles draw.

Meanwhile, the host nation has lost all its boys. Henry Von der Schulenburg gave it his all but still came short against Zsombor Piros, who played the big points exceptionally well. The Australian Open champ came out on top, 6-3 7-5. Jakub Paul had to swallow a tough defeat by the hands of Czech fifth seed Michael Vrbensky and Damien Wenger came short against Siim Troost of Estonia. All the Swiss hopes in singles now rest on the shoulders of Simona Waltert and Ylena In-Albon.

Today’s schedule comprises of 60 matches, including lots of doubles. In order to get back on track with the programme, the doubles format has been changed. Sets only go to four games, there is still the no-ad-system in place as well as a Champions Tiebreak as a final set.

The 16 & Under event in Moscow saw its biggest shock yet as Spain’s Gemma Lairon Navartro ousted top seed Denisa Hindova of the Czech Republic for the loss of just three games. Ninth seed Ilya Beloborodko of Ukraine was the top casualty in the boys’ event, a 6-3 7-6(12) loss to France’s Baptiste Anselmo.

At the European 14 & Under Championships in Most (CZE), the top seeds mostly progressed without incident. However, if you were Slovakian and had to play someone called Matilda, it wasn’t a good day. Sixth seed Vanda Vargova retired whilst trailing 1-6 0-1 to Matilde Paoletti of Italy, whilst eighth seed Inez Kotlikova was outlasted in three sets by Britain’s Matilda Mutavdzic.
