Fact Sheet

2009 Tennis Europe Junior Masters - 16 & Under

Miki Jankovic and Jovana Jaksic recorded a double victory for Serbia on the final day of the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Napoli, ending the season in style with the country's first ever titles at the event.

Fifth-ranked Jankovic was in control throughout the weekend, sweeping to the final with straight sets wins over Connor Glennon (GBR) and Lukas Mugevicius (LTU). His opponent in the deciding match was home hope Michele Palma, who had receeived a last minute invitation to participate in the elite event due to the last minute withdrawal of qualified player Elmar Ejupovic.

Palma capitalised on his good fortune, scoring upset wins over 9th-ranked Lloyd Glasspool (GBR) and second seed George Tsivadze (GEO) to ensure a home player would appear in the boys final for the first time in three years, and gave Jankovic his toughest test of the weekend before losing 7-5 6-4.

Jovana Jaksic put in an impressive performance to wrap up her biggest title of the year, and her third in total. Having survived a marathon semi final against second seeded Romanian Simona Ionescu 64 26 76(4), the third seed showed her 'A'-game with a 7-5 6-4 defeat of Ganna Poznikhirenko, the only player of 32 present in Napoli to qualify for the event for a second consecutive year.

For her part, Poznikhirenko had upset European #1 Elena Cadar (ROU) in the semi finals, recovering from a dismal first set to advance 1-6 6-2 6-3.

The Junior Masters is an elite event for the top eight best-performing European players on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. Former Masters champions include Rafael Nadal, Tommy Robredo and Kim Clijsters.
