2010 Helvetie Cup - 16 & Under Girls

Russia beat Ukraine 2-1 to successfully defend their Helvetie Cup title in Leysin (SUI).

Russia took an early lead as Margarita Gasparyan beat Kateryna Kozlova 6-4 7-6(2) in the singles match between the #2 players of each team.

Reigning Roland Garros junior champion Elina Svitolina then levelled the tie with a 7-5 6-1 win over Daria Gavrilova.

The Russians had the upper hand when the four players returned to the court for the deciding doubles match, securing their title defense with a 7-6(7) 6-3 win.

The win marks the third European Summer Cups victory in this age category for Russia (following on from 2004 and 2009), although teams from the Soviet Union also triumphed three times (1982-83, 1990).

The competition also serves as the European qualifying event for the Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas. Russia and the Ukraine will be joined at the finals in Mexico later this year by the third to sixth-placed teams, Germany, Czech Republic, Belarus and France.
