2010 Europa Cup - 14 & Under Girls
Russia beat France to win the Europa Cup title for a second consecutive year at the final rounds in Loano, Italy, but was made to work hard to hold onto their crown in a deciding match between two unseeded teams.
Ylyana Ayzatulina put the defending champions ahead with a 6-4 6-2 win over Laura Tanfil of France in the opening match, and Ksenia Sharifova looked to be on course to clinch the tie after taking the first set 6-2 over Estelle Cascino.
The French #1 fought back, claiming the second set on a tiebreak and racing through the third to level the tie.
The French team had been hoping to sweep both 14 & under titles for the first time in the 30 year history of the event, but the Russians took charge when the four singles players returned to the court for the
deciding doubles match, winning 6-4 7-5.
Both teams have also secured a place at the ITF World Junior Tennis competition in August, alongside Ukraine, Spain, Austria and hosts Czech Republic.
With seven wins in total, Russia has now won more Europa Cup titles than any other nation.
